Diagnostics of some sort. If they can't fix it they should swap it unless you're content never using Filevault again?

I think I should give them some time to find out if this is a software bug or not.

I really can't see the point in swapping it in if this is only a bug. But off course, they have to tell me, if this is a software bug or hardware fault. I need to know that

Filevault is whole disk encryption. When you turn it on it will start encrypting all the data on disk in the background so you can still use the computer. Of course this will have a negative impact on performance. The amount of time necessary for it to complete depends on the amount of data already on the disk. Usually it takes a couple of hours when you keep on using the machine. If it is a brand new machine with a brand new installation then it also needs to update the Spotlight index (as well as others and caches) which also takes its time.

Best thing is to wait a day, maybe two, and then check back to see if the problem still persists. If so then you need to take action (troubleshoot (do check the logs in the Console app), report it to Apple, visit the Apple Store, return the machine, etc.).

I understand:) But still, this doesn't explain the file vault bug, when its on the screen flickers when logging in.

I have heard about allot of people having this problem

Regardless, a screen flicker here and there or a distortion for a second is no reason to turn off File Vault. It's just a cosmetic thing and isn't hurting anything. It's always gone away for me as the computer continues its boot, anyway.

There have been occasions where the factory default install was somewhat wonky. A simple reinstall fixes all that so that is another thing to try.

@jcarlson: there are fans in the machine which could make that clicking noise. Is that noise happening at certain times/occasions? SSD is all electronics so that can't be making clicking noises like you are describing but those fans could. As well as the trackpad (if you rest your wrists on it, I wonder what happens).
The discolourations are rather difficult to see on that image. The quality of the image is so bad that the poor image alone could be the culprit. By the looks of it I think it is just the common reflection of some sort of light source in it.

@SlickVik: That thread shows the exact opposite, there are hardly people agreeing with you and all the likes are going to the people disagreeing with you.

@Pootmatoot: the fact that there threads about those issues are non-existent on the first page of this subforum says enough.

There will always be issues with any product, that's how the statistics are but here on MacRumors all hell breaks lose when someone has a scratch he found with some electron microscope. Things are grossly over-exaggerated here. Oh, the solution is also rather easy: contact the seller and get it sorted. It's what grownups do.

Wrong - please review thread again as there are far more people reporting poor manufacturing defects.

Did so and came to same conclusion. Apparently it is you who is wrong and needs to review that thread as well as review the other threads in this subforum. The amount of people without issues outweigh the ones with issues.

Btw, reviewing actually means that you don't sum the amount of issues but that you look into the reported issues!

It definitely feels like a very different QA level. Apple products often have one single design flaw - antenna-gate etc - but this release seems to have many issues across many different areas - broken keys, a variety of graphical glitches, a razor-sharp finish on the vent holes, over heating etc.

Have they slashed QA costs?

Apple's QC is a ship wreck across their entire product range. A damn shame.

You do not honestly think that he reads and answers them himself?
He does.

One time I wrote a complaint bitching about ads in radio. Two days later I got a phone call from their head customer support dude from Texas. Said he received my email from Tim. But I was more surprised by the fact that they managed to find my phone number. I guess they pulled it from my Apple account as I emailed him via my iCloud address.

Yeah... Tim Cook didn't read that. And "Head customer support dude" is one of hundreds in various call centres.

That email address is a message dump that's run by Customer Service. It's normal practice in any large public-facing company: tens of thousands of people try to contact a major CEO a week. Even his real internal email will be prefiltered by staff. as that alone will be in the thousands.

Your credulity shows it works. The smoke and mirrors made you think you got special treatment. You didn't.

What's the benefit of encrypting your disk? It's not like any ordinary person will be able to crack your password. And I think Apple limits the number of attempts. Let alone decrypt the disk. Unless you have something to hide on the state level? Tax evasion or a huge stock of bitcoin.

fialvault is junk and cripples performance do not use it
Nonsense. First, it has no affect on performance. Second, it is vital if you have confidential information on your machine.

If you don't encrypt your disk, then they don;t NEED your password. They can simply remove your hard drive, or plug a special USB drive into any USB port, and they have all your data, without the password.

Well, I don't want to be an alarmist, and it's not a big deal, at all, but just for kicks you might try tapping the bottom casing. You see, in order for them to reduce as much weight as possible, they are now making them out of tin foil. Seriously!. Just tap the bottom. These things are going to dent REALLY easily. The good news is, it's easy replaceable.
The top isn't like that, just the bottom. Even my ultra light 12" MacBook is thicker metal.

BTW, whatever you do, do not press down with any force as your finger will continue on into.....

I think this has to do with file vault. If you turn it off that won't happen.

I've seen people report that, and that seems like the kind of thing which shouldn't be physically possible unless something is wrong with the hardware.

Reading these threads about people having problems with the new MacBook Pros is putting me off. I'm glad I didn't pre-order and think I'll wait this one out for another 6 months or so.
