Not only did they make it uglier, but they also removed an important feature: rate/like button on the lockscreen.

They hid the Like/Dislike button so deep in the UI it's almost unusable now. It is supposed to be an important feature for Apple Music that they promote so much now. So logical.

Like/Dislike model itself was fundamentally flawed anyways (should've been Like/Neutral/Dislike to be at least be feasible), but they removed Star Ratings from iOS (WHY???) which served a crucial purpose in building Smart Playlists.

Thankfully there's a widget appropriately named Music Rating Widget that still works with Star Ratings but at $1...

Couldn't agree more. Apple seems to have a habit of taking things (and interfaces) that don't need fixing in the first place and ruining them. :(

Agreed, but it's not bad enough to make me revert (if they're still signing iOS9 anymore). Lots of other cool features.
Intentionally break something and fix them, this is the new way for current Apple to bring "innovation". Not all of their changes but software is one of such, in some places.

Appearance wise, yes, iOS9 looks better (although the grey and small fonts are really hard to read).
For iOS10, it's about usability. Buttons are larger so it's easier to interact with. Fonts are larger so they can be readable, not just looking nice.

I guess it's a trade off. I have tried many different music players on Android, and the ones that are usable are like this. Big buttons. Not pretty and looks like something from the 90s, but usability is better.

There's a way to have both. Apple, with all of its budget and designers, could've invested more into working in both usability and good design. That's what UX/UI is all about.

Never used the Heart button or the Star Ratings.

Based on my use case, useless/pointless controls have been removed, resulting in a cleaner UI.
Your use case isn't relevant though. In iOS 9, they introduced the heart feature to tailor Apple Music to you. It was easy and fast to like a song to work that into their generated playlists. Now it's another step. They're adding more complication to they're own software.

Of course it's relevant. I use Apple Music, but I don't use Apple Music generated playlists.

I'm willing to bet a large percentage of the Apple Music user base operate it the same way I do.

Just to add, and it's slightly off topic, but there are things about the new Music app that bug me, like how we can't seem to re-arrange the Up Next playlist anymore (e.g. drag songs up and down).

Is it just me or is the new lock screen display for when music is playing horribly ugly compared to ios9?? What do you all think... is this just me?

It's not just you!!

I actually really liked the old music app. It looked really good!

I know everybody's taste is different, but in my opinion the new music app is really ugly! For a design driven company like Apple it's a step backwards in my opinion. Looks now like a third party app. Don't know where Jonny Ive was when the decided to release it. Or probably he was in the room and they said if you want to remove the headphone jack we are going to design the Music app without asking your opinion...

Anyway... Also don't like the new Controlcenter very much... It's always the wrong screen showing if I need it...

Rearranging up next works just fine here :|
I have to confirm - setting next is working fine on SE

This may be a stupid question, but how exactly are you dragging up and down?

When I press and hold on a song in the Up Next list, it flashes grey then back to white and it can't be moved.

Another issue I'm having is that when I swipe to the left and remove a song, it disappears from the list fine, but when the player gets to that point in the list, it plays the song anyway!

You have to hold these 3 lines on the right from song name and move up or down the list.
I do that on the list bottom from present playing song.

Deleted song is no longer played - checked that

Then the "For You" screen will be full of things you won't want to see, then you'll cry here that Apple is only sending you teen pop.

The like/dislike function is now a critical part of using AM, and they buried it in a menu. Good job!

Thanks.

I don't have the three lines to drag the songs...and my deleted songs keep playing. Very odd.

EDIT: Ahaha, I must have toggled the "Repeat All" option, which stops you from re-arranging the up next list. Turn off repeat all, the dragging icon appears and everything works as expected. Thanks for posting the screenshot, it helped!

The For You section seems to populate just fine based on what I listen to.

The section is actually useful on iOS10. On iOS9 it kept recommending that I "discover" albums I already had in my library, but perhaps this was because I didn't use the Heart button.
