Nope I was disappointed too. I heard the about the single, downloaded the video and was pretty excited. I liked all the previous non-remix CDs (PHM, DS, and fragile) and I consider the downward spiral one of my top 10 favorite CDs of all time. The single sounded like a throw back to PHM in style, just a little crunchier, and I liked it. I listened to all the previews on iTunes Tuesday and couldn't find anything else that interested me so I spent my $.99 for the single and that was it.

The first tune on the album, All The Love In The World, took a few times to grow on me. I'm not used to Trent hitting high notes. lol
After 2 days, that's becoming one of my favorite tunes on the album.
The only statement I disagree with you on, is that I don't think any tune sounds like PHM. At best, it could come from Broken. Just my 2¢.

well actually the album only took a few months, the rest of those five years were trent coming to terms with his addictions. and in my opnion this sounds nothing like the fragile, this is much more stright forward, has the live drums, and has a simpiler feel to it than fragile
proof that druggies make better music ;)

So far I like it (not "wowed" by it but I like). But it usually takes me about three months of on-and-off listening to really decide if I like an album or not.

The first time I heard the single, I didn't like it (but it was a fairly low-rent audio stream), but it's grown on me. And at CD quality I hear subtle textures that weren't there in the streaming version. And that really is the brilliance of Trent Reznor is the subtle depth that his music has. The deeper you dig into it the more you find. A little texture here, a little flourish there. Things that don't really draw attention to themselves singularly, but they add a depth and a color to NIN's music that is rarely seen in music that reaches into the mainstream.

If I had to play the "this sound like" game, I'd say this album sounds like it would have been the bridge between TDS and The Fragile. Not a cross between them, but a bridge connecting them.

I think it's interesting to hear the evolution of NIN's sound. PHM was pretty simple and straight forward. TDS kept the same energy of PHM, but started adding more complex layers and structure. The Fragile is very much the opposite of PHM stylistically. The Fragile's long, complex soundscapes are just brilliant, IMO. The layers and textures Trent seamlessly guides the listener thru are just amazing. The Fragile is my favorite NIN album and, IMO, one of the best albums of all time.

I just saw NIN last night in Denver.
Amazing show! I was stoked that he's playing a generous amount of the PHM-era stuff on this tour.
As for 'With Teeth'.. my initial impression was disappointing.
However, I plan to give this album time to grow on me. NIN's music tends to make more sense the more you listen to it. :D
