It's a speck. I'd have to see it in person, but from the picture, it looks like nothing. Personally I would't be bothered by it, but if you are, see if you can get it exchanged.

The only other thing I want to point out about when the aluminum is chipped, that can also worsen over time or expand, so it’s likely best to have it exchanged. Especially given where cases might rub up against the chip.

While you're right about all of this, I can't help but wonder how long it will take for that area to get marred up from the cable. I'm seen countless phones that look like they fought asphalt in just that one spot, so I'm patiently waiting for my beautiful red to start showing some age lol. Personally, I like having that little bit of character to a phone; it shows you use the damn thing and don't treat it like some special gadget you can't get dirty (can't stand that mentality, and I was raised my whole life to be like that).

If it were my phone, with just the single chip in the finish... I'd probably try to negotiate some store credit, a free case (at least mid-range in price), or maybe push my luck and hardball for some free AirPods. I'm a total prick like that, though lol. But combined with the gap between the screen/body... can't help but wonder if that phone had a slight issue during assembly or packaging. Makes me wonder what might be wrong internally. Maybe it was poorly handled? Since there are always going to be a few that fall through QC, I wouldn't be terribly worried. Then again, it's a brand new device from Apple... and it's far from what I'd consider to be in the "affordable" price range without signing up for some program/contract/etc. ($800 base price is not "affordable"). So yeah, might as well shake the tree and see what falls into your lap.

(a) take it back (b) go to WalMart and spend $5 on enamel model paint and dab it on.
Honestly, I just a nick in the paint that would normally happen to me within weeks of using the phone.

No no, I'm still here. :) Got a new phone from Apple. The new one is fine!
Seems like I won the "iPhone lottery" with the second one! Nice finish, great screen, better than average scores (about 1%) for iPhone 8 in Geekbench 4 bench marks, and a 103% battery capacity according to iMazing! :)

If I bought the product red phone I would run naked or clear case.
So the initial ding would bother me.
If it was any other phone I probably would have a case on it and it wouldn’t bother me.
This one, I would return it in full and repurchase it.
I would completely repurchase it so the box information matched the phone.

When selling the phone some people care about whether the phone matches the serial number on the box.

Ah. I’m not too well versed with the secondhand market. Even then I’d put that under “petty”, but I get it.

If the ding was caused by me, then it’s something that I would have to manage myself or try to find a way to touch it up. But if it arrived from the factory even with a minor inconsistency of a tiny speck of a ding, I would return it no matter what. It shouldn’t have to be Like that, especially if someone is taking notice of it.

Apple will probably refuse to exchange it and claim you made the dent. I got my iPhone X replaced at the Apple Store. Upon coming home, I noticed a pretty deep scratch in the center of the screen. I didn't really check it at the store because I was told it was a new phone. I went back the next morning and they were adamant that they would not replace it. They kept telling me I was lying, scratched the phone myself and was trying to get over on them. I had to speak to 2 different managers and cause a scene before they agreed to replace the screen.

Got my Product Red 8 on Monday but haven't got the time to open the box until today. As soon as I remove the plastic sheet covering the phone I see this mark or dent in the anodized aluminum frame below the home button. It's not big but it's there and can easily be seen. What a disappointment... If it would have been on any other side of the frame I guess I would not have bothered but now... What would you do?

Reading through your post, I would say that’s completely variable based on the store and employee’s . Many times customers have received New phones that have had defects of some form or another with a scratch on the display, a dent in the casing, a gap between the display and casing, etc. And Apple will exchange those phones with a new device if you’re under return period or issue a warranty device if its out of return period. Very few manufactures will meet the expectations that Apple has with their customer service and making the customer satisfied with their products. There are hundreds of posts that reflect Apple assisting the customer to resolve issues that may or may not have been there fault to begin with.

Maybe it's just the Apple Store in Sacramento, CA then but they are very hesitant to exchange devices. I brought in my iPhone 7 Plus with a display issue that was intermittent. Because I couldn't produce the same defect in the store, they wouldn't exchange my device.

Doesn't matter what anyone else would do. It's your phone and your choice. If it bothers you, exchange it. If it's not that big of a deal to you, live with it. Only you can make the decision.

Well said. Don‘t ask others, makeup your own mind.
