It looks more consistent with new design language.

I didn't like the old beachball design and I don't like the new one. It looks completly out of place - whole OS is grayish (windows etc.) and beachball is colorful. There's no other place in whole OS that is so colorful.

I don't know how anyone can consider it good representation for heavy background task that must finish before you continue.

EDIT: I'd prefer they rather fix Finder so it doesn't completly hang up and force me to restart Mac when LAN connection hangs up during file transfer or listing catalogue.

I am less concerned about the style/appearance of the beach ball than the frequent occurrance in the El Capitan Public Beta 1 - 5.

Looks like crap, guys. C'mon. Apple's lost it's heart and what it stood for.
I actually like it. The old one didn't match the Yosemite UI at all and I was surprised to see it in the final release unchanged. The new one is vibrant and goes well with the Yosemite icon theme.

From a graphic designer point of view the Spinning Lollipop Of Death makes sense. The old one really didn't fit the overall theme.

Now whether the overall theme is or isn't up to your tastes... that's a whole different story. (Where is the "Yosemite is ugly!" topic when one needs it...)

To tell you the truth, unless a program is on the way to crashing (see any Office 2016 app) I don't see any beach balls as of PB 5. Everything is very snappy.

But I use a current MacBook Pro and MacPro (all SSD and maxed out RAM). YMMV

isn't the whole point that we don't want to see the beachball? so...let it be ugly (personally, am just happy it's changed at all), since we're not supposed to 'like' seeing it anyway...

This is true, some of us are weed smoking New Yorkers :D. Either way to me its a non event. I hate the beach ball for what it stands for, doesnt matter what it looks like.
I believe it was originally derived from a 'busy CD ROM' icon and then became a beach ball. During the 10.0 beta/release period in early 2001 we on MacNN forums dubbed it 'spinning wheel of misfortune/death'
