Today a new search engine called cuil.com (pronounced cool) was released today. It claims to search 3x as many pages as Google and 10x as many pages as Microsoft. What do you think?

I think they're off to a rough start.

I like their interface. Maybe they're still indexing pages! I'd be interested to see how good their results get in a month ...

IMO, there's no way a new company can simply appear out of no where that is better at search that Google. No way.

Microsoft and Yahoo spend billions trying in vein to better them, where has this company come from, who are it's backers?

They seem to have some impressive management, I just can't buy that it'll be better than what we have.

edit: the layout of search results is horrid.

edit2: 3x as many as Google?

cuil - "bmw" - 57,000,000
google - "bmw" - 308,000,000

cuil - "apple" - 83,200,000
google - "apple" - 561,000,000

hmmmmm. I think not.

I like the look n feel, but the layout seems a tad confusing. I searched for microsoft. It display not only search results, they have "Explore by category" and a menu bar with more categories?? There's too many options to click, and I couldn't really get an overview of the search though.

EDIT: Bug, Clicking on "Explore by categories", you get a new search but it just append those keywords to your existing search keywords. I ended up with a search of "Microsoft Outlook Microsoft Office 2007 Microsoft Office"

I rather like the layout having images descriptive of the site.
It feels intuitive but unpolished with a few bugs here and there, the potential is there but the name is off putting, i would rather see google redo its interface to something more intuitive like this than tell people to "Cull" it. google it sounds better.

I get this:

We’ll be back soon...

Due to overwhelming interest, our Cuil servers are running a bit hot right now. The search engine is momentarily unavailable as we add more capacity.

Thanks for your patience.

"Welcome to Cuil—the world’s biggest search engine. "

How did they come to that then? Something tells me that Google is just a little bit bigger...

Its not bad but I prefer more results per page. Having only 10 takes ages to find anything and I cant find a way to change it.

Not that the amount of results found to a query is all that relevant (it's accuracy that counts), but still, Cuil claims to have 121 billion pages indexed, they claim this is substantially more than Google. Yet I have yet to find a search query for which Cuil returns more results than Google, and that's with Cuil's safe search turned off and Google's turned on (can't turn google safe search off at work). That should give Cuil an advantage if it's indexes were as great as they claim.

Right next to the search input box is a link for 'Preferences'. Scroll to the bottom of that page and you can see a option for 'Number of Results'.

I did a search earlier and got some results. I do the same search again and I get nothing.

This is what I get (bugger all) on the Preferences page:

Pronounced cool, this is the newest GOOGLE Competitor.

They are built by former Google employees, and tout a larger index, and a different format for displaying the results.

anyone tried it yet?

Like? hate? think it will be a formidable competitor to the big G, or just fall by the wayside?
