It provides more detailed synopses / page previews. I haven't tried in depth to find useful information with it, but it also features categorical / hierarchical similar search topics to help you. For instance, this is a sample when I searched for "binge eating disorder."

I like that idea a lot.

It seems really useful for more browsing searches -- I'm not as sure how good it'll be when I want to find something very specific, e.g. searching for technical solutions to software problems or something.

I briefly checked out Cuil. I like the layout/colors and pics with summary, however I prefer results to be in rows instead of columns. I like Google and I don't have a reason to change.

Also, I don't understand why they would brand a new product with the name "cool" and then spell it as "cuil". It looks like it should be pronounced as "quill". I would have to explain how it is pronounced/spelled whenever I talk about it. That does not seem to be a good way for word of mouth advertising.

Cuil has a LONG way to go to impress me. First, a sample of search results:

  • Results from a search for "cuil":
    Cuil: 121,578 Google: 643,000
  • Results from a search for "google":
    Cuil: 172,000 Google: 2,740,000,000
  • Results from a search for "apple":
    Cuil: 83,200,000 Google: 570,000,000
  • Results from a search for "macbook pro":
    Cuil: 1,400,000 Google: 21,500,000

Also, Cuil offers no advanced search tools, options to show more searches per page (I prefer 100 per page, as it's faster to load the page once and scroll, rather than wait for 10 pages to load), no images, maps, news, etc.

Cuil may be "cuil" but Google is "cool!"

I still prefer google, I like a list rather than lots of square blocks of info...

I agree! I don't like the Cuil layout at all. I want a page full of links with brief descriptions, so I can scan the results and determine what's relevant to me, rather than have someone make that decision for me.

Its not bad but I prefer more results per page. Having only 10 takes ages to find anything and I cant find a way to change it.
Right next to the search input box is a link for 'Preferences'. Scroll to the bottom of that page and you can see a option for 'Number of Results'.

I think MacBoobsPro was referring to the fact that Cuil doesn't offer a way to select more search results per page, like Google does.

A geographical oddity
The media buzz has certainly generated a lot more traffic than they cana handle, so I'll probably check it out later.

I agree with the naming issue though. I was trying to figure out how queue-ill sounded "user-friendly." That it is cool is not clear at first glance, which I think will slow down adoption as word-of-mouth praise will be stunted. "I went to cool.com like you told me and didn't see any Googling site."

Big ... doesn't mean squat

Accuracy and availability -- those would be important.

I completely agree! As another example of why Cuil doesn't measure up, in a search for "Harley-Davidson Rocker C" (one of H-D's newest bikes), does Cuil not produce even ONE result from Harley's own website in the first 50+ results, where Google has Harley-Davidson.com as it's first sponsored result, with another non-sponsored result on the first page? This is only one example, but I find that not only does Cuil not produce nearly the number of relevant hits that Google does, most of the time, their results aren't as relevant to my search, as are Google results.

It's an Irish word, and is not really as simple to say as pronouncing "cool".

Unfortunately, that doesn't really matter so much. It will likely confuse users. When I first saw it, I thought it was pronounced "kweel".

I'll also check it out more tomorrow after the servers recover from the sudden publicity.

How timely, I was mulling just yesterday whether anybody new would be able to enter the market dominated by Google, I kind of assumed any challenger would come from India/China for some reason??

Of course I can't access it yet, which isn't a great start, but sounds interesting.

Don't like the name though; "Oh I'll just cuil it." not as easy on the ear as Googling it somehow.

Saw this on BBC, tried to access the site this moring, wouldn't even load. Now searches just keep returning an error.

So I'll stick with Google for now! =]

I wish I knew how to change to Google.ca for Safari's default engine, though.

No joy for me.. and black websites look terrible.

Although they say the name is "Gaelic", I'm pretty sure it's not! Having learnt Irish in school, I've never heard of it, and I had a quick check on an online dictionary with no results!

And, 'tis a crappy name.
