I kinda like this idea.

For the MP experts, is that enough granularity for what we are trying to do here?

How do you think it will look with a longish prefix like that in the forums? Maybe shorten Mac Pro to MP, so have "MP 1,1 - 5,1 (Original Tower)"?

I think a shortened version would be fine. It’s already going to be a sub forum of the Mac Pro section, so there shouldn’t be any confusion at all.

I like this as well. You can also reduce these names to somewhat longer versions of short names in current use:

otMP (Original Tower)
cyMP (Cylindrical)
ngtMP (Next Gen Tower)
MP (Generic-refers to Mac Pro as a class).

I always thought of the Trash Can as more of a "Mac Pro Tube", possibly because it rhymes with one of the (if not The most) most beautiful machines Apple's made: the G4 Cube.

Perhaps I’m in the minority

You're not in the minority, it seems every time Apple updates a computer people ask for a specific forum for that new model. the forum would be a tangled confusing mess if that was the case. Prefixes are a nice way to help manage the differences.

The original towers are so old by now, that it is fine to put them together. The cylindrical model is so different that it should keep its own. I like it.

I suggest removing what is in the parentheses, as it is just a visual description, which is already specified by the model name. And you'll want it as short as possible in the forum view. And for people who actually use these tags, it won't make a difference if the description is there or not because they'll know the difference anyway.

MP7,1
MP, all models

The below prefixes have been added to the Mac Pro forum and they will be mandatory for new threads. If it proves confusing for newbs we can always add in the parenthetical clarification later.

MP 1,1-5,1
MP 6,1
MP 7,1
MP All Models

It should be shortened to just "1,1-5,1" "6,1" "7,1" or "All Models". Drop the MP prefix, it makes the tag look messier.

Any reason why the prefixes have to be in a dark grey box ?
It's very distracting and looks terrible .

I don't get why there have to those prefixes in the first place .
People have simply inlcuded the respective MP model in the thread titles for years, never seemed to be a problem .
