I plan to use CCC5 to do a backup on the same Mac one in my office and one at home, each location use a different external drive.

I read on a CCC documentation that after the first backup, CCC will use UUID to identify the external backup drive, it suggests that I can not use another external drive thereafter. To overcome that I have to go to advanced setting and disable "use strict volume identification", I.e. identify external drives by name only.

But after this step, can the two external drives have different name? OR they must have the same name? For example, both must be named "CCC backup", but can not be "CCC backup-1" and "CCC backup-2".

Also, what will happen if the original external drive (whose UUID had been identified by CCC) failed? Can I use a new external drive for replacement?

Send a email to Mike at CCC he will respond with an answer,

You would want them to have different names, primarily just to help you keep it straight in your head what drive belongs to what machine.

But as long as you keep things sorted out and connect the correct drive to the correct Mac, it won't matter.

Thanks you both for replying.

Carbon Copy Cloner or CCC is a very responsive company. I wrote to CCC and got answer back within a few hours. Still not clear, asked again, it answered back again. Furthermore, the answers were given by a person seemingly very knowledgeable.

CCC's answers regarding the number of schedules and external drives are paraphrased below.

When a task or scheduled task is created for the first time, this specific task is associated with two UUIDs and two names, one set for source and one set for destination. This task will run in the background after I quitted CCC. Before the task is carried out, CCC checks whether the associated source and destination (external drive) are there. If not, the task won't run.

There can be many tasks or scheduled tasks running at the same time and they are running independently from each other. Each of these tasks is associated with a source and a unique external drive having an unique UUID and name. After I quitted CCC, they all run in the background. And obviously a task can be deleted.

Thus, I can do a CCC backup to two or more external drives at the same time as long as a separate task is created for each external drive.

If the purpose is to do a separate CCC backup at home and in the office, then there is no advantage at all to disable the UUID feature because if I am in the "office", the home external drive won't be connected, thus the "at home schedule" is effective not running, only the "at office schedule" is running, and vice versa. Having two scheduled tasks allows fine tuning of schedule, but consumes more CPU, as constantly there are two tasks running in th background.

I had an error message "Waiting for macOS to update Kernel Extension Cache", Mike sent me a patch the next day and everything is working. No Problems since, have done multiple backups.
I can no longer imagine life without CCC, and Mike is great. I don't usually enjoy paying for software, but with CCC I have no problem whatsoever. They are absolutely worth it.

I have written to CCC several times, and every time their response was quick, answered my concern, polite and ended with "if u have further questions, please let us know". Well, I did let them know several times by sending them more questions or to clarify what they said. They didn't seem to mind.

In addition to attentive customer support, CCC has clear and simple user interface and a lot of easy to understand documentations.

I read that CCC offers discount to students and people with .edu email.
