I want to be able to buy 720p Movies. Or even if they did a resolution just slightly above DVD would make me choose iTunes, I suspect they might do that before HD.

Or, I would accept the current resolution, if they offered $3 rentals.

The changes in the :apple:TV are gonna bit a bit more drastic than folks think.
If you have iTunes 7.3.2 go look at the localized strings.

Here's an example :
<string>The Apple TV “^1” contains new voice memos. Would you like to move these voice memos to your iTunes library?</string>
<key>4309.080</key>
<string>Moving voice memos to your iTunes library…</string>
<string>The Apple TV “^1” is synced with contacts on another computer. Do you want to sync with this computer and replace all existing contacts on this Apple TV with those from this computer?</string>
<key>4309.152</key>

Return of the standalone iSight with USB that plugs into the AppleTV and those memos? It's an answering machine. Yes, I know it's not going to happen, but the technology is there.

This would actually make quite a few people happy as it would mean one could purchase an iSight again - yay for people with Mac Pros, and the USB port might be opened for peripherals - like external hard drives. Not to mention, easy video chats.

It seems to me that the more Apple develops their products, the less they want you to be spending time using a computer. iPod and AppleTV let you take movies and music to where you really want to view or listen. iLife encourages you to go out and take photos and video, with the promise of sharing it later. The pro apps are really designed for you to have the least amount of interaction with a computer as possible to just view or quickly edit movies, photos. The mac is just staying out of your way and letting you get done what you need to get done.

Maybe he just means "news" like MSNBC or CNN... :p

so you mean entertainment? when the news starts reporting the news again, I'll start watching it. I don't care who's baby daddy's who or whatever. I especially don't like Rupert Murdoch. Now its going to be hard to even read the Wall Street Journal without dry heaving.

All right I give up. How you think you can get away with a sentence like that without explaining how you do that is hard for me to fathom. Do you please have a link to instructions on how to do what you mean? You use Vista to record HDTV and serve it on an iMac? Please How? Cause if that's true I'm off to buy a HP 2.4GHz Kentsfield tomorrow.

It's quite simple.
- I use my Windows Vista PC to record HDTV shows.
- The recorded shows are MPEG2, but they have a wrapper that needs to be stripped. Several pieces of software do this, and it takes about 1 minute to do for each show.
- The shows are stored in a shared folder on either my Vista PC or my Windows Home Server
- I open VLC on the iMac and point it to the folder with the shared TV shows.

DVD/HD quality movie rental.

Would save me from buying a Blue Ray player (crosses fingers.)

Keep your fingers crossed...

I downloaded ST: Enterprise in 720p on XBox Live - took forever, and it only made me want it in 1080....

High Def in 1080 will take forever and a day to download. Better off getting the high def disc (maybe get the more economical HD DVD if there are enough movies you want on it, or go ahead and make the Blu-ray jump).

HD DVD in 1080 looks stunning...

Hmm... The strings Peace posted are interesting. I'm taking this from vandlism and sort of expanding it out.

Could anybody see the AppleTV be used for video conferencing? I mean, it's almost as powerful as Mac mini and even the G4s can do video conferencing. It would be cool no doubt, video conference on a 42" LCD. High Def iSights anyone?

That's what I said, 5 channel (DPLII, not DPL, which is 4-channel).

5 channel muxed surround is just a hack compared to discrete surround.

The ATV has optical out, it really should get an update to support discrete surround (which has been the industry standard for years, pro logic is old, inferior technology).

And I'd love to see where these "inexpensive" hdtv's are, unless you get a fairly small one they seem pretty darn pricey.

I dont think that theres going to be an update, I think all we are going to here from Apple is that they are dropping the Apple TV.

Yah. I have decided that instead of getting a good oppo DVD upscaler player I am just going to spend the extra $250 and get a blueray.

I have netflix so I look forward to renting blue-rays from them.

There's so much potential in this market for Apple, if they just listen to the consumer's needs. They clearly didn't the first time around.

They won't drop AppleTV. It's too cool of a name/title. :) It'll morph big time though. I'd be happy if they either put more memory in it or created a removable part type of situation.

Yep. I'm positive they will *not* drop the Apple TV. This product will be around for a very long time.

I was thinking and this is what i think is going to happen, They are going to kill off the Current Apple TV and introduce a new Version of it. Its going to have a much bigger HD and its Going to include A tuner card HD and SD, Digital Radio and Some other features. but i dont see Apple Continuing the Current Apple TV.

The current :apple:TV meets the majority of consumer's needs... it's just those of us that want to use it for something more, or just replace those pesky DVD or Blu-Ray players in our living rooms...

I'm sure as it gains popularity they'll introduce more models with more capabilities. Look at the Mac's growth sequence and the iPod's.

Yeah the current Apple TV is too limited by its hardware.

I got to wondering about the Apple TV after I saw the new Bluetooth wireless Apple Keyboard and heard Steve say that people like using them in their lap.

I don't think there is any way that Apple will put a tuner or digital radio into the next revision. Both of these things would cut into their licensing profits too much.

If you have iTunes 7.3.2 go look at the localized strings.
Wasn't it revealed not too long ago that these strings are standard for all devices? I think it had to do with iTunes strings 'hinting' at games for the iPhone, but it was determined that these strings come with the AppleTV, iPod, Nano, etc.

I'm bringing this up because I know those are all messages I've seen when syncing my iPod. I'm not quite sure how a voice memo could be relevant on your HDTV...

EDIT: Yup, here it is: https://www.macrumors.com/2007/08/09/iphone-games-not-necessarily/
DownloadSquad points to iTunes strings which reference iPhone games as evidence that the iPhone may get games in the future.

Unfortunately, these iTunes strings seem pretty standard when Apple adds a new device to iTunes.

Previously, people found Apple TV game strings. As a result, it seems unlikely that these strings mean anything.

...and its Going to include A tuner card HD....
Apple will NEVER integrate a tuner or DVR capability into the Mac or AppleTV. It's just never gonna happen. If you know anything about Apple, you know that Steve Jobs hates the whole concept of "recording" TV. Apple's model is "pay for downloads" - period. They may introduce some sort of rental system at some point, but I doubt you will ever see DVR functionality from Apple. Again, it's just not gonna happen.

I would love to see HD content from iTunes. I can't believe they haven't introduced it yet. AppleTV is a dead product if they don't go HD.
