Apple is shipping these CPUs because they have them. There's no need to ship anything more advanced for people to update their Mac apps. It's no different than the original Intel DTK which shipped with a Pentium 4.If people would keep their pie holes shut, the DTKs might be machines that actually reflect real performance of what would be sold. If Apple could trust developers to obey their NDAs, they could disclose more to developers. Not rocket science.

The results demonstrate what we largely already knew- that the A12z runs faster than many Intel chips. I wouldn't say that the results aren't valid.I saw a video on YouTube where they did a geekbench test made for x86 chips, using Rosetta. Completely pointless and stupid. The results have no validity at all.
