Thanks everyone!

A 128gb Sandisk CFExpress just arrived from Amazon(along with a UHS-II SD card), so the various "pieces" are coming together. I still don't have a reader, which will likely be here more toward the end of the week(I went for the Sony one that can do XQD and CFExpress both) but of course can go direct to camera in the interim. It's not my preferred way, but will do the job. I sold two XQDs and a reader(XQD-only reader) when I sold my D500...but honestly unless I one day end up with a D4 which AFAIK never got a CFExpress firmware update, I don't see a reason to buy XQD over CFExpress even if the latter in the same brand is sometimes a bit more expensive. The CFExpresses I buy now will hopefully carry me through if I decide to go the Z route in the future.
Looking forward to seeing the results. Enjoy your new set up.

So far enjoying the camera...but...

It's really annoying me that Nikon had to swap the locations of the mode and ISO buttons. I know it started with the D5 and D500, and fundamentally since ISO probably gets changed more often than mode, having it next to the shutter release makes sense.

Still, though, I'm still in D800/D810 mode, and I don't know how many times now I've tried to change the ISO and instead found myself cycling through the shooting modes endlessly.

I had a D500 in the past and I don't remember fighting with it this much, but maybe the similarity between the D850 and D810 is what's throwing me off here. I'm sure I'll get use to it, but I can complain about it in the mean time, and I can see a problem going forward trying to use my other bodies along side it.

i had the same problem between my d700 and d800. i think that’s largely why i never fell in love with the 800; it just didn’t feel right after the 700.

It's amazing how these little differences can mess with you.

I no longer have a D700, but the D200, D300, and Fuji S5 all have similar control layouts. The D3 is also similar, although it also has some single-digit body commonality(stretching back to the F5) of the 3rd small LCD and its associated buttons. The D3 and S5 are the only ones of those that I use occasionally now, and zoom in image review always messes with me on those bodies.
