Yes, but when it's time to upgrade (I'm not talking about those of you who feel the need to have the newest and 1% faster computer), your panel is already obsolete and has been replaced by newer technology (LED, touchscreen, etc.). Even LED-backlit displays will become obsolete someday.

OLED's will be here before you know it. they're already putting em in keyboards.

Guess that's how you do it. I keep my monitors a couple generations of computer as they are normally top of the line... I still use a 20" LCD and have no plans to upgrade and buy another. Oh well, that's why the H ackintosh was invented :p

30" iMac? If you want a 30" monitor you are probably someone that wants a Mac Pro. It's a waste to have such a large monitor you can't use after 3-4 years.

30"? I want one...

Actually I am a pro who happily uses a 24" white iMac, daily & professionally. I am jonesing for a 30", and thought that it would be the next logical step beyond the 24's. I love the extra footspace I gained by not having the tower underfoot, and it was a pain crawling under the desk to insert/remove CDs & DVDs. Honestly, after 4 years I am going to be begging for a new system anyway... and I would rather be out 3 grand, than 7. Expandability & longevity are Red Herring arguments against the larger iMacs. I kept my g4 sawtooth for 5 years, but I couldn't see dumping add'l money into it to try and keep it "current" a new pro system would still blow the pants off it (actually my 24" blows the pants off the old system). I know I am in the minority here, but I say the fully figured 24's are apt pro-sumer machines. I don't do video, but beyond that I am able to produce entire publications and work on huge 1.5gb pshop files with no difficulty. What is the point of having a machine that works faster than your brain does anyway, lol. Of course I can remember the not so distant days of waiting 45 minutes for a syquest drive to copy 45mb worth of information... I don't miss that at all.

So... bring it on Mr. Steve. This busy professional wants and would buy a 30" iMac the day it comes out (just like I did when the 24" first came out). Give me a better video card, and 4-6gb of RAM, and I will be a happy camper.

cheers,
michael

I completely agree. I have a 17" G4 iMac that is almost 5 years old. Still going but slowly dying. I am NOT lamenting the loss of the keyboard when it comes time to replace the system. I fervently hope that a 30" iMac comes out and soon. I really think that the iMac is poised to become a secondary home entertainment system for a home office or bedroom.
I am shooting for May to purchase a new system. That will almost be the 5 year mark for this old warhorse. The old 'upgradeability' canard is so last century.

I agree that the iMac should be a long term machine. (I still have my G3 iMac from 2001, however the price of a 30" computer will be lacking in value added. I hope to use my 20" aluminum iMac for at least another 4 years. After that, it should make a good computer for my parents or to keep around.

I would love to see the Mac Mini updated (even if it's just CPU and RAM) but importantly I'd be hoping for a update to Wireless N, which would basically make it an ideal media centre/file server.

Any chance tomorrow is the day? I'm not getting my hopes up.

I'd like to pick up a mini but I'd like to have the ability to get more ram in there then the current 2Gb limit. Yeah, I know that it can accept 3 but I'd like to go to 4 since ram is getting cheaper.

I'm in no hurry though.

I was in the store (best buy that is) on Saturday showing my mom the iMacs and she loved it so much that we were going to get it at that very moment - but I told her to wait untill Tuesday (tomorrow) because there was a chance that Apple might upgrade the iMacs...if there is no release tomorrow, we are going to bight the bullet and just get the computer tomorrow. The screens on those iMacs are gorgeous

Any Video-Card bump would make me happy. I honestly don't think I will be able to tell the difference from the new Penryn, and all those GB's of free space won't be filled up, so anything else will be just an added bonus.

Oh, 2GB of RAM plz...and a Blu-Ray player. Or not

Penryn's main advantages are increased battery life and lower heat output. (Also, the SSE4 instruction set.)

It would be nice to have these in the iMacs and Minis, but the power and heat improvements were more conducive to the MB upgrades. There's a small chance of Apple holding off for Montevina (really Cantiga).

Well the Apple Store is currently down, for what it's worth.

I'm more or less with you. I'm waiting for a higher RAM ceiling and something a bit more futureproof than GMA950 graphics. I'm not in a hurry, but if it doesn't come fairly soon I would suspect the Mini would be discontinued, which would be too bad.

Apple store is still down... Dont think it would be anything major.. Maybe Penryn iMacs would be good to level them with MBPs...

Does Apple Store always go down every tuesday for maintainance?????

Well, if the store is down in part for iMac updates, I'm buying a 24" as soon as they are back up. If the GPUs are not upgraded, however, I suppose I'll join those waiting for Montevina.

I have a feeling that Apple will use the same cards, except they will bump up the max VRAM to 512 (they can't not do it after doing it in the MBP, right?)

just what I think.

Right. I'll add that I'm not being critical of the 2600 HD Pro, as the YouTube videos I've seen of iMacs running games via Boot Camp look pretty good. The card has been around awhile though, so I'm hoping for something newer and more powerful.

There's always something to look forward to with Apple. For me, that's part of the fun.
