As much as I'd like to jump on the bandwagon that falsely believes affordable OLED tablets don't exist, Samsung recently released the Tab S4 with a 10.5 inch OLED screen for $649. So it is possible.
However, this is an instance of Apple doesn't need to, so they won't, due to a) profits and b) their market position with the iPad.

Surprise! The iPhone XS Max is already more expensive than a MacBook.
I really hope not. OLED has a characteristic color shift at even shallow viewing angles. It's already a minor annoyance on my relatively tiny Max screen; I can't imagine using an iPad Pro with that issue. Furthermore, it seems like mobile 120 Hz OLED screens aren't possible at a reasonable price point.
I'll give up deeper blacks for better viewing angles / no color shift and 120 Hz any day.

Why does everybody keep posting about OLED iPads and how they will grab it when it's announced this year or next. OLED is no bueno on a tablet (and especially if one likes the 120hz refresh rate the iPad Pros have, which if OLED is put on them I doubt Apple will be able to keep the 120Hz refresh on such a small OLED screen right now.) I really like the 120Hz... much more than the contrast and colors of my Xs. OLED is NOT worth it because it has that bloody ridiculous thing called burn in/image retention, (thats not good doctor Jones.) *Think about when you are typing notes or sketching and the entire screen except the little words or lines you're drawing are left there for hours, that will become: image retention and then broken display.
Micro LED is what all of you should be asking for, it's far superior to OLED in essentially every way, and the best part is a year or two after it debuts... it will be much cheaper to make, it will get the same brightness, same blacks, and vivid colors without image retention or burn in.

These are the reasons why I have zero interest in OLED on an iPad.
I think people should start to call it "OLED wear" instead of burn-in or image retention. What essentially is happening is that the OLEDs are worn down.
Where are you getting the "Micro LED is cheaper to make" from? At the moment it is not considered commercially viable although the hope is it will be in the next 2 or 3 years and be able to compete with OLED pricing. There are still a number of issues to be resolved before they can scale the tech down for normal TV sizes let alone tablets.
What do you base this on? Actual numbers or guesswork?
My mistake, right now and in the coming years it will be more expensive, (with R&D it will be more expensive when released to recoup those costs,) but since it isn't an organic compound and can be manufactured instead, so once it's more widely used...it will inevitably be cheaper to produce than OLED.

Apple doesn’t have an IPS 120Hz ProMotion HDR display.
They have a wide enough color gamut for HDR, but their contrast ratio is much too low to be certified as HDR:
“A maximum luminance ('brightness' spec) of 1000 cd/m2 or more, along with a black level of less than 0.05 cd/m2. This would offer a contrast ratio then of at least 20,000:1. This specification from the Ultra HD alliance is designed for LCD displays”
OLED is great for video, and many games, but for most other content, I think I’d prefer LCD.

OLED isn’t a deal breaker for me. I guess I’m easy to please because I still think the screen on my iPad Air is good lol...

Absolutely !! Why are people jumping on the horse ?? by speculating that OLED Panels will be expensive to make, who the hell herr has any contacts with the display suppliers in China and Taiwan or even Samsung, LG, or Sharp !! It is all very fun and elite and suauve to talk well I know much and so I know OLED are expensive to make .Everyone is effin giving their rubbish here ! No body here has any credible information or contacts that can verify this information that OLED Panels would be three times the cost to manufacture ! Can people stop postung stuff like this !!
