I am making an iPad Pro next generation prediction. I predict that the next iPad Pro will have a M3 Max chip. When I say I am predicting, I really mean that I am hoping a lot ….. lol … Let’s start this rumor and maybe Apple will see it and make it happen. Next iPad Pro with M3 Max chip.
It would take some very unlikely events such as an iPad with some MBP-grade active cooling and MAXON releasing Cinema 4D for iPadOS for whatever reason.

I want M3 Ultra in my AirTag. And more ports.
Right? It is incredible how cheap Apple is when it comes to ports. Some complain about the new MacBook Pro, but on the AirTag the situation is way worse. How am I supposed to plug it into… Okay I think I’ve pushed the joke too far

OP, sarcasm aside, what you’re hoping isn’t realistic. The thermal design of those chips require active cooling. The only SoC designed to work without active cooling is the base one, and to make things worse, we haven’t seen any M3 device without active cooling yet.

An iPad Pro with an M3 Pro? Unlikely, but I’m not gonna say it’s impossible because the M3 Pro now has less performance cores and more efficiency cores, and maybe that lowers the power consumption and heat generated… but the M3 Max? That’s almost a desktop chip. Yeah, I know it is on the MacBook Pro, but it requires a good cooling system.

After seeing the leaked M3 benchmarks, I take back my statement of M3 Pro.

The iPad Pro will be phenomenal with the base M3.

Why on earth would they do that? Certainly when it’s more useful than the Mac in all media and app usage plus it has touch/pencil

Because everyone seem to be complaining how useless it is. Always complaining about the software. Pro iPad but you can’t really do Pro stuff because it only has iOS… bla bla bla.

Yes, we hear this quite often. My reflections:

All complainer sits with a Mac as reference point and are usually clueless about when iPads are useful besides the consumption. The fact they mention iPadOS instead of apps speaks volumes of their knowledge. I just shake my head when I see statements like "iPadOS does not fully utilise M1". Neither does MacOS for that sake. It is only the compute heavy apps that have a chance to max out SoC utilisation. So called multitasking is rarely more than having many windows/apps open which is RAM dependent. True, iPadOS RAM management is poorer than MacOS but with 16 Gb RAM you come a long way.

The complainers also have not figured out that the iPad is a touch first AND a cloud first device. The complainers also have not figured out that in many situations, typically away from the desk and coffee shop tables, MacOS is just crap and iPadOS is so much better: teaching, education, healthcare, construction, law meetings, flying, sales all where the IT device is a helper for a primary task being done. The complainers have also not figured out that these jobs are actually performed by professionals. They associate high complex computer work with professionalism and therefore falls headfirst into the "Pro" marketing of Apple. So easily led...

People just love to moan about what it doesn’t do. The mac is great for business but the ipad is better than the mac in basically all media and overall app usage tasks. I think people simply want them to be the same product where the ipad can activate a macOS mode when in reality it will never be that even if apple are making it closer each year.

I know when apple release the new trackpad that looks like the macbook base and has a bigger trackpad that people will again think of the mac but I don’t see it ever having macOS but for what I think people use it the most for doesn’t need to be that.

Complainers often forget that lack of desktop software on iPad (or cut down versions of it) is not due to Apple, but to third party companies...
Having said that there are things about iPadOS when complainers do have a point. I personally don't agree at all that the iPad has to be a cloud first device.
File management is still subpar because of the sandboxed nature of the system, which is app centric and not file centric, despite all the "patches" Apple has been putting on it...
But I agree with the core of you point. These people are just trying to have a laptop first. They only want portability and battery life. They generally care little about touch and pen support or about the flexibility of detaching the screen, using it in portrait mode etc.

You have to wait and see what Apple is going to do because they’re going to make whatever they want and move on.

App or file centric is a matter of taste. There are other OS that are (or was) app centric like Windows. I came from Windows and going over to file centric MacOS was hard.

I still do not get this sandboxed nature, perhaps I only need the basics. It is possible to organize your files as you like, just like Finder. The default app is opened when a file is pressed wherever it is placed, just like Finder. Pages can open Word files but not from Files but from the app. Files has poorer external HD support but work great with cloud services. Works for me. Choosing files and moving them is easier in Finder but that is due to difficulties to chose multiple files easily in iPadOS.

Not being able to adjust to another OS mode is a weakness.

You mean it is a strength not to adapt? I think most of the complainers should stick to their Macs because the iPad will never fit them because it is the wrong tool for the job. Why complain? There are great Macs around.

To make it perfectly clear, I use a Mac more than an iPad and never wished the iPad to work as a Mac or vice versa. In my opinion, they are two devices, two OS, two use cases and each is optimised for the respective use case. What is wrong with that?

Nothing wrong with that. The weak amongst us stand in your judgement. (I've used over two dozen OS's in the 45 years I worked as a s/w & h/w engineer).

It's not a matter of working like a Mac or not, it's a matter of what one thinks it's the most effective approach... it's like asking someone who prefers MacOS to adapt to Windows and viceversa... that fact that you can adapt does not mean that you like the approach.
And where on earth is Windows an app centric system? I have been using Windows since 1992 with 3.1. The only app centric system is IOS, and iPadOS, while improving things with the file app over the various updates, is still to a large extent app centric. The fact that you cannot choose/change you default apps for each file type like you can on every other system including a mobile one like Android, since forver, is a legacy of the Steve Jobs era.
Like with every system, there are things I like in iPadOS, MacOS and Windows and things I don't like in each of them. It's not because I like better one system that I am ok with every approach it adopts.
The system has to win me, not the opposite. I use Windows, MacOS, iPadOS and Android every single day. But I use each where it excels, often in combination, if things change in a way I like or dislike I may move part of my workflow to one of the other systems.

Most efficient approach irrespective of the device/OS. Exactly!

Remember that iPad is for the ordinary people and not for the specialist. How many do you think needs to change the default app for a file type? What is more intuitive, open a file via the file systems of via an app? Does it matter?

I work with MacOS, iOS/iPadOS and a number of Windows versions, the oldest being Win XP (excellent OS actually) and some OS in embedded systems. The MacOS apps for engineering and for controlling instruments is rare so from that point of view , I could conclude that MacOS is "crap". It is not, we only lack MacOS version, just like desktop apps proert to iPadOS.

Then you are fully aware that OS/Software/HW are optimised for certain tasks. It bother me that people judges the iPad and iPadOS based on desktop setup rather than field work (ie out of office work). It is like evaluating a sports car for moving furniture to use SJ car/truck analogy. To many commenters/complainers of the iPad expects the feature list of MacOS for desktop work, when in fact the OS/SW/HW is optimised for something else. Using the wrong evaluation criteria is a weakness in my view as it display lack of knowledge or lack of understanding.

I think it's not up to you to say who the iPad is for. At best, it's up to Apple. And with them expanding the line with the pro models they have opened the iPad to many other use cases and people compared to the original Steve Job vision (larger devices, stylus support etc.)
I had zero intereste in the device Steve Jobs presented as I am not a couch person (that's why I didn't buy an iPad until 2014). Now I own multiple iPads.
iPad is not just for the "ordinary people", but can also be for the specialist. So yes, file system can matter. And what is more intuitive is subjective. And it can even be used professionaly in an office environment (not just field work), just not as a replacement for a desktop but as a complementary tool (monitor, document viewer, annotating device etc.)
iPadOS does not and should not be like MacOS, but it needs improvements in some area. It doesn't mean that it is crap as it is.
