Dell as an alternate source for OS X boxes

I know I will probably catch flack over this, but personally, I would like to see Apple team up with somebody like Dell to provide cheaper, low-end macs for the average consumer to really give competition to MS. You know, Dell notbooks and desktops with OSX as an option. They could bring in the $600 notebook and $400 desktop crowd. Though Macs wouldn't be so much of a niche market afterward, they could really take a lot of market share. But that's just my 2 cents.

Sorry, wanted to clarify, I don't mean Apple have Dell make all of their computers for them. I meant have Dell put OSX on some of their cheaper notebooks and desktops. Apple would still build their own computers as well.

If Apple is going to continue to take marketshare away from Windows machines, something like this will almost have to happen. They could tap into Dell's proven manufacturing capacity. They could craft an agreement that allows Apple to have exclusivity over certain parts of the market, but let Dell do their thing in areas where Apple does not directly compete. They could even let Dell handle their own support, although that could be a challenge.

Dell would have to offer a limited set of hardware, so that Apple would be able to keep OS X well-integrated and reliable. Video card chipsets could not change on a monthly basis like they might in a PC. Dell already does something similar to this, with their Optiplex (business-oriented) line vs the Dimension and Inspiron lines.

To an "Enterprise" buyer, this means they are not bound to a single source for OS X machines. Dell is clearly a brand they would find comforting.

I could see Dell offering low cost desktops and laptops with OS X, and possibly the expandable, mini-tower design that many here have requested. Apple could keep the higer-end and the sexier products. Dell would appeal to switchers, home users, and business customers.

As I have described it, this would be nothing like the last time Apple allowed other vendors to create Mac clones.

would be sooo awesome
might actually happen
but then apple would no longer have only sexy hardware, cause dells computers are nothing compared to the macs

this is what i think it will look like
(A little bit of my handy work:) )

Utterly Epic.

If they don't kill it, that is, and that looks to be what they're doing.

yeah i think this is what it will look like considering that a apple tv is nothing but a small mac and the same for the Time Capsule(sorta). And they are all the same size

My 2 cents.

I'm using a PPC 1.42 GHz Mini as my main computer.

I have a PC for gaming. It gets turned on for 2-10 hours a week.

The rest of the week, it's all Mac Mini all the time.

The current generation don't offer enough of an upgrade from the PPC to jump. But I will be in line on day one for the next upgrade to the Mini line.

This one will become a Time Machine/Network storage system.

If they released a Mini that could either drive (well) a 30" display or two 24" displays, I'd be in heaven. With current computing power and that added feature, I'd be a happy happy boy.

I have zero complaints about my current Mini, it's just aging. Microsoft isn't updating Silverlight anymore for the non-Intel PCs, so some sites don't load. If Snow Leopard really doesn't support the G4, I'll lose out on the stability upgrades. So I'd like to see a new Mini, pronto.

I just sold my mac mini because it lacks way to much for what I do (or just picked up)

I was going to get a bottom line iMac, but when I thought about it. I can get a PC much MOOOOORE fast for less than the cheapest one(iMac)

Intel Quad Core 2.6ghz Yorkfield and 4 gigs of ram, plus everything else

I already have a monitor, so as hard as it was for me to say bye to apple, it was clearly easy in terms of finance who to choose

Does this mean you are back to using Windows? LOI
Let's hope you can use Ubuntu or some other distro instead. I could never move away from Mac OS X now. No way.

yup it does. I get it for free. I don't like it nearly as much as OS X. But I don't hate it. For all the money I'm saving, well worth it.
