as reflected at this and other rumor sites, the form factor for the next iteration of the iPod Nano may change to a rectangular model, while that is conjecture at the moment, what do folks imagine would be the future of the watch function--is it gone?

I read that somewhere, but can't remember where. I hope that doesn't happen. I plan on buying the updated one just for that feature. I don't need an iPod nano, I already have several previous generations including an iPod mini and an iPhone, but wanted to get it just to wear as a watch.

I guess we'll see what happens.

That has got to be the strangest philosophy... if you want a nice watch buy a nice watch.

Meh I guess if the marginal benefits exceed the marginal costs your decision to buy a nano solely for the purpose of wearing it like a watch would be justified...

I tend to agree it makes a poor watch as it is but a redesign could make it more waterproof.
Anyway count me in the group that wants it to keep the same size, because I use it as a pendant in a case, works great at the beach and the gym. I have that aluminum iPocketWatch case and a change in the shape is going to prevent me from upgrading.
Here's a thought, what if they get rid of the current shuffle line which has become pretty lame and just relabel the current Nano as the Shuffle Pro and then make the new larger Nano that is rumored.
Yea that's the ticket.

Not really I bought mine just to wear as a watch. But I do once and a while use it as an iPod lol

P.S. I am an Apple freak and everything I run is made by Apple so I might just be in the minority.....

Bought the new model to a) upgrade my 2nd gen, b) have a pair of headphones on my flight home , and c) to try out as a watch.

I was hoping for the same form factor with BT added...but perhaps I'll be disappointed. :(

Maybe I should have elaborated more. I'm hoping Apple updates the iPod Nano with Bluetooth capabilities to pair with my iPhone. If I receive a call I don't have to pull my phone out to see if I'm going to answer or not. It shows up on my watch. I can receive notifications/reminders on the iPod Nano as a watch, etc.

I currently don't own a watch because all it does is tell time. My iPhone already fulfills that function. For me, a watch that has a lot more functions, as I just mentioned, would be worth purchasing and wearing.

BTW, I never said I wanted a nice watch. The word "nice" was not mentioned in my original post. IJS

I hope not. I may use of those one day for exercise and music. So much better than sweating all over my iPhone :D

Just wondering... I still have the stone age ipod nano. (the white plastic top with silver back) Was there like an exchange program from Apple some times ago? Is it still available? Should I wait until the new model? Do you think I gotta choose which model I can get, the current ones or the new ones? (sorry for that many questions)

Yes, the exchange program is still available. Go visit the nearest Apple store, and ask them for replacement. It's for first generation btw.
Even if the new models come out, I believe the 6th gens will still be available. If you've got time, wait until Apple releases the new one. What I did was, replace the 1st gen with 6th gen, sold the 6th gen, and have some extra money saved up for potential Bluetooth iPod nano watch :D

Thanks. I think I'll wait and see what the new ones will look like and what if offers. It's funny that I didn't like the nano watch idea too much at the beginning, just a bit too toy like you know, but then finding it cool looking. (isn't is the same to many apple products? :D) Wonder how much further they can push this product. Slightly bigger screen size? I like big watches, and that way maybe we can have more memory too?

haha, yea, that's also a good choice.
Well, maybe not a bigger screen, but maybe slimmer? I found the iPod Nano to be a little thick due to it's clip design. Hopefully Apple won't kill this product (at least rename it to iWatch or something.)

Got it. :)

There are so many smart watch options out there or in development that do exactly what many people in this thread want the iPod Nano to do.

well this is all very interesting;

is this Apple saying, an iPod is an iPod, its not a watch. Even though Apple themselves seemed seduced into the concept--the last OS update included an expanded set of watch faces--they now seem to have turned away; does this nano OS even contain a watch function any more?

well then so be it, sad to see some of those creative solutions, like LunaTik, left high and dry.

:( I'm definitely feeling blue today. But..... But I'm not still giving up hopes that Apple will develop a separate model for wearable watch concept and start selling it next year! Hopefully.....

I think that the wearable design of the 6th gen was sort of the wrong direction for the nano line. It went from a widescreen device that could play video and a scroll wheel to let you navigate through tons of music to a tiny screen with no video support and multitouch for scrolling.

This new nano seems like a much better successor to the previous nanos.

I do think that the wrist-wearable form factor may return someday, but not as the iPod nano. It makes a lot of sense as an iOS accessory type device with bluetooth and very little internal storage.

:D Me too brother! Keep the hope alive!

I understand that there are other smartwatch options, but I's really prefer an apple device to fit this niche. I'm a total fanboy, and just want a watch that lets people know.

No More Watches (for now)

The square Nano is done, and Apple does not appear to be continuing it. It wold not surprise me in the least if this former model becomes sought after by many. However, I'll bet Apple brings back the square "watch" as there has been too much buzz about a possible redesign that included this functionality. Perhaps like the resurrection of the square clipping shuffle, it too will rise again. In the mean time, I bought a closeout/refurbished nano from the Apple Store this morning. Next week (or the week after), all the wrist bands will be knocked down to such low prices, that perhaps I'll buy a few different ones.

Me too! Lets start a campaign for the Shuffle Pro! We want the watch!

Apple Refurb...

I have a silver 8gb nano that I've been wearing for a while. People always ask what it is. I use it as an encrypted drive for important work info and for music and a pedometer when I run.

I was very disappointed with yesterday's announcement so I went and bought a 16gb graphite nano from Apple's refurb store for $119 to gain some storage space and also because I really liked the form factor and am disappointed to see it go. I'll pass on the 8gb to the kid. I expect that the watchbands will majorly go on sale soon. I thought they had a good concept and would try to mature it. Maybe they looked around and saw that companies were sprouting up to design a watch that integrated well with a smartphone and maybe they will purchase the technology and absorb someone else when the time is right and it has matured? Don't know.

I have several expensive watches and I always go back to the nano on a daily basis. Something about wearing an encrypted drive on my wrist that appeals to me.

Good point...the bright side of this is that some of those expensive nano watch bands will probably plummet in price. :D

Well ok, if apple used the form factor to bring out an accessory to the iPhone or iPad that would serve as a remote unit a la Notification, perhaps even allow for standardized replies to texts, emails, display incoming call info, etc etc., basically and extension of my iPhone/iPad that would minimize the need to go to the mother unit for casual interactions, then I could go for that!

I had to chuckle at the notion of wearing a nano as a watch, then I had to google for some images. Interesting, but since I don't wear watches... :)
