Next updates for iMacs?

Besides the processor upgrade, what else could be added to the iMac in the next update? I really cant think of anything they would do besides upgrade the RAM limit and hard drive size....hm

I'm looking to get one for college but am willing to wait until the next upgrade..hopefully it comes before this summer!

Just a @#$%&* non-glossy screen option would be fine with me. Criminy, I still can't believe Apple botched this iMac so badly--and that's an easy thing to get right. I know the new iMac is popular, and I know my opinion is in the minority, especially here on a site like MacRumors where most people don't want to hear the negatives, but it's the truth. Apple hobbled the iMac with that one decision.

I really need to upgrade my outdated computer in the next few months and I'm seriously looking at buying a PC, as much as I despise that idea (although my employer uses Windows and it would make things slightly easier for me in terms of work.) But the glossy screen is a deal breaker for me and as it stands, there is no Mac right now that matches what I want for the price. The Mac Mini is underpowered, the Mac Pro is way out of my price range, and I really don't want to buy an old refurb or used one.

So for me, the simple addition of a matte screen option would be a welcome "upgrade." I'm hoping that Apple offers that before my patience runs out.
 
Is the iMac screen really glossy, or is it only glossy because of the glass front? Not that replacing the glass with something that isn't refective would be very easy.

Personally, I would love there to be a 30" iMac, but I can't see apple releasing one until they have a larger size cinema display available. I guess a blu-ray drive wouldn't be bad either, but I wouldn't have much use for one.
 
iMac wish list

I'm hoping for a GPU upgrade. At least make it as good for gaming as the MBP. I've been checking out potential graphics cards and I'm pretty sure that keeping the iMac quiet really limits Apples choices.

How many of you wish that Apple would come out with a mid range tower that was upgradeable?

A bigger screen option would be cool. I need to get a new tv and getting a larger screen computer would allow me to postpone that purchase for awhile. Not sure if that would be a cost effective way of doing things though.

How about 2 internal drives?

All this waiting had me visiting Dell's site a couple of days ago and it made me really bummed about the limited choices that Apple offers.

hoping for GPU upgrade and a price drop for the 24" models

i can always dream of a HDMI input aswell to use the 1080p resolution of the 24" screen but doubt that will happen

The panel itself is also glossy, at least it was on the $1499 model iMac I saw torn apart at a service center.

Are you actually suggesting that someone buy an external monitor for a computer just to make up for shortcomings in the built-in monitor? That means the cost of an iMac jumps +$600 all because of a dumb decision on Apple's part and that's ridiculous. :mad:

True, but for the kinds of applications where a glossy screen is a problem (color correction), two screens is really nice to have. For photo editing, I love having one screen for the photo and another for tools.

But this is a home computer where, presumably, most people do not need additional monitors, nor do they want the added expense. I sure don't.

This sums up so perfectly how I'm feeling right now, at first I thought I wrote this post. :)

I wanted so much to like the new iMacs, but having looked closely at the glossy screens of the 20" models... I'm not impressed one iota. Thus the relatively painful decision to go PC for a desktop will be taken in the next few days. Though I'm not happy about doing this, I think those iMac screens are so bad that I really have no option. - I just hope that Apple don't introduce a matt-screen option soon after I get a PC.

Honestly, they're not. I use the white iMac at work all day and the 20" aluminium at home. I love the glossiness - games and DVDs look fantastic on it. Yes there's a grad shift, but you don't notice it once you've got used to it. And reflections are only a problem if you stick it in the wrong place like opposite a window.

Getting a PC because you don't like the look of the screen in the Apple Store is seriously shooting yourself in the foot.

I'm pleased that you're happy with the 20" glossy iMac screen (as are many others), but as my new desktop will have to suffice me for about 4-to-5 years & being that the monitor is so fundamental (also the graphics card to a degree), there's no way I want to be putting up with something so ill-suited to my needs for such a long time. An anti-glare monitor is fundamental for me (& thankfully MBP buyers do still have that choice!).

I've even considered getting a Mini when I get a PC to make that buying decision somewhat more palatable, but not until the Mini gets another update; which must be due soon unless it's to be retired.

Getting a PC may seem like "seriously shooting yourself in the foot", but for me at least putting up with that glossy screen would seem like shooting myself in the other foot. :)
 
Dreaming, but still...

I know it won't happen but I'd like to see Apple add in a small, user-accessable SSD drive that houses the OS alone in addition to the traditional hard drive.

A more realistic want is a faster FSB/RAM setup with a small speed bump on the CPU and maybe some more powerful GPUs.

Right. I don't think some people on these forums appreciate how much this is a rock-and-a-hard-place type of situation for some of us. I'd love for my next machine to be a Mac, but I don't think it's going to be unless Apple updates the line-up with a matte screen option. I use Windows and Macs 50/50 at work and I'm computer savvy enough to jump to another platform with relative ease. It's not that I'm looking for reasons to go to a PC, but there is literally no Mac in the Apple store right now that is what I want for the amount I want to spend.

And you know, it's not like I don't appreciate that Apple's manufacturing costs would go up if they offered that option. Fine. Charge me another $100 for the matte screen. I don't care. I would pay it. It would be a small price, but they don't even offer that. They're at the peak of their popularity and their configs for the consumer machines are as limited as ever. I just don't get why the matte screen, which has been standard on iMacs for years, can't still be an option.

Not really.

The truth is that Apple screwed up with this and I hope they correct it. Matte displays are still superior to glossy for color correction and design pros won't settle for the distraction, annoyance and inaccuracies caused by reflections and glare and the oversaturation of color that glossy causes. And that's not even mentioning the issue of color shifts in smaller viewing angles that the glossy screens introduce.

If Apple wants to lose out in the design market, they merely need to introduce glossy as the only type of Cinema displays. The design world will drop Apple displays instantly. Designers aren't your average consumer browsing computers at Best Buy, impressed with how cool the shiny screens look. They want color accuracy and no distractions and glossy screens don't cut it.

The future most definitely is NOT matte-less.
 
I think most people who do design work and want macs get Mac Pros. Meanwhile, the iMac is targeted to people who will use iPhoto, websurfing, and occasionally watch dvds - so having a matte screen is not necessary.

I doubt apple will offer a matte imac because their target market doesn't really need it or want it. It's similar to how they haven't offered a matte MB. The people who want matte need more hp under the hood anyway so they go with the pro line.
