You know what I'm going to really miss about my HTC one if I do switch to the nexus 5?

The swipe home app. I'm gonna miss mainly the swipe up and down to put the device to sleep the most. It's such a wonderful feeling to be able to sleep your device in any app at any time anywhere on the phone.

Couldn't you replicate that? It might take a little effort since it isn't baked right in but I feel like it can be done.

Swiping upward on stock android launches Google now.

I've tried it on my nexus 7. It doesn't work unfortunately.

It'll be fine considering the power button will be on the side where it belongs ;). And there's still always power toggles that let's you put a discrete lock screen button on your home screen. I've done it before.

Gotcha. Even though I'm sure you could stop google now from coming up that way and have it activated another way. Sounds like a hassle though. That power toggle is nice and discreet.

I'd love to see some form of LG's knock on feature be implemented by a dev. I would use that constantly. I have seen where you can slide in a certain area to turn on the screen but it doesn't work quite as well.

I'm expecting a 4.96" screen, 1080p, Snapdragon 800, Sony 13MP camera, 2GB RAM, and a 2300 mAh battery all for less than $450 for at least 16GB. Am I expecting too much? I don't think so.

Definitely not, the Nexus 4 had top notch specs of its time and was sold for considerably less than that year's flagships from HTC and Samsung.

I looked at the G2 today. If the new Nexus has the same quality display as the G2, it will be amazing. I was very impressed with the display. It did feel a little large, so I'm glad that they are making it a little smaller on the Nexus. I went back and forth from the Moto X and Galaxy S4 to the G2 while I was at the store. AMOLED screens just don't compare to a top of the line LCD like that of the G2. I just read the review of the G2 on The Verge and I see that they were also impressed with the display. I'll definitely be holding off on the iPhone.

I don't know why, but I'm really excited about the N5. I've never been an android user, but I'm getting sick of iOS and the nexus phones seem to be the right path.

Right now I'm in the point where I'm more exited to hear the n5 announcement than I was for the iPhone 5s.

Just a couple of questions. Are the nexus truly global? And if it comes in November, what shipping times should I expect? Meaning do they run out of stock quickly? Cause I have to receive the phone before mid December.

You sound like I did last year with the Nexus 4.

A "world GSM" phone should work on just about any GSM carrier. So the Nexus 4, being all GSM and no CDMA or LTE, will work on just about any GSM network.

With shipping times we have no idea. The Nexus 4 was awful in this regards as they got backordered.

Works fine on mine (2nd gen). Just start swiping right at the bottom of the device so the tablet registers a swipe over its soft button area too.

Last year if you were not in the original batch, which sold out in about an hour, is was a few months I believe. However, the Nexus 7 launch went way better this year so hopefully that is a sign of what is to come.

You're right. I gave it another shot and it does work, but it has to be so accurate as to not overlap with the Google Now gesture that it's almost useless, in my opinion.

Me too! Especially to wake the device. One of the most novel features of the G2.

I wonder if we'll get more announcements of GPE phones at the Nexus 5 event.

Maybe the Moto X and possibly the Xperia Z1?

I don't know about that. Would they want to risk blurring those product lines even more?

They announced the S4 GPE at the Nexus 7 event.

But you're right. Any GPE would seem like direct competition to the Nexus 5.

Maybe a silent update...? I don't know. Just throwing the question out there.

They mentioned before that the Moto X will get a Google Play Edition. Maybe they'll announce the release date?

iPhone 5 32GB (unlocked) go for $450-500. Hopefully the Nexus 5 unlocked is cheaper than that because if its anymore expensive, it would be a huge turn off.

Did they? I recall the mention of the Developers Edition, which now appears to be close to release, but don't recall confirmation that there would be a GPE Moto X.

This is what I read:
http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/1/4579278/google-play-edition-moto-x-announced-coming-soon

But they didn't list a source, so I don't know...

That may have been a misunderstanding. On This Week in Google, episode 210, Leo said that Guy Kawasaki told him that there won't be a Google Play edition. He said it will be sold on the Play Store but it will be the normal phone.

Fair enough, though the benefit of having stock Android on the Moto X is lost on me. Most of the allure, at least in my opinion, is from the add-ons that Motorola included, including any optimization for their x8 cpu.

I'd seriously consider picking up the Developer Edition it it wasn't that awful looking white woven back--saw it in store and it was already discolored and filthy.

Update: Just saw an article over at Android Central that Android 4.3 build for the Moto X leaked from a test device. At least it looks like Motorola is trying to stay current with updates.

Something that is bothering me....what could possibly make google reduce the size of the battery to 2300 vs the 3000 in the G2??

I know they are moving the buttons to the side from the back but the thickness looks similar from the leaks. Any thoughts?

I'd speculate it's due to a few things. The dimensions of the rumored Nexus 5 are significantly smaller, regardless of thickness--approximately 7mm shorter and 2mm narrower. They are also obviously rearranging the hardware layout (camera, volume and power buttons) so that may have an impact on available space for the battery. I would also guess that cost comes into play--a 3000mAh battery most certainly costs more than 2300mAh and the Nexus devices are priced very competitively. It may also be to simply differentiate it from it's LG sibling. Considering it's size is between the Moto X and the Galaxy S4/HTC One, it's battery size seem in line with those devices (2200, 2600/2300 mAh respectively).

Just my $0.02.

I appreciate the 2 cents. That all actually makes a hell of a lot of sense.
