Just got the DP Android 7.1 installed and running on my Nexus 6P. Have the Pixel Launcher, Wallpapers, Weather and Google Now all working without root. In DP 7.1 long press on app icons work. Live wallpaper is beautiful. Camera is so insanely fast now (same as the one in the Pixel image). Dialer is updated. Have a restart option. lol. Only thing I am missing in built in assistant and I won't mess with my build.prop because I love Android Pay.

Google came through getting this all out to the 6P quickly. Makes it much easier to wait another year on the Pixel.

Nicely done!

Other things for the 6P I am seeing that I wasn't expecting:
-Automatic system updates in developer options turned on by default (thought this was Pixel only)
- 24/7 help and support to call or chat is a big separate tab in settings. I think Pixel gets some sort of video support in addition though.

These might just be in for a quick cut of the Developer Preview.

Also, HDR processing in the camera and focus seem much faster.

Yeah, avg sale prices for the 6P on Swappa were higher as well. Looks like all of those hoping to see another midrange priced Google phone earlier this month have turned to the secondary market.

How does one get the DP? With Apple, there is a way even if one isn't a developer. Is it possible on the android side cause I want the goodies for my gold 6P. :)

I posted the other day one can get the pixel camera software app for the 6p and 5x, did you grab that too?

Just note that some of the things like Pixel launcher and wallpapers aren't available in the play store if you don't have a Pixel. But you can install the apks from the links in this thread just fine. 7.1.1 does give you the updated dialer, camera, keyboard, long press, ect.

Can you change the location of the Google "G" tab?
No. Not a massive fan of that tab honestly but at least it doesn't take up much space. Since I am not rooted, I can't swipe left to get to Google Now (needs to be a system app) so I put the Google Now icon down in the dock there. Actually I like it now that I have used it for a bit. I can long press it for options.

So yeah that tab is mostly useless. I think it is basically just Googles branding, much like a shirt tag, on their launcher.

I did see a video review of the Pixel where they were able to switch from the "G" tab to the Google Search Bar widget instead, which seemed more helpful...so at least there's that.
[doublepost=1476936855][/doublepost]I've used an iPhone for the last 8 years, but have slowly been getting tired of Apple and iOS and am really gonna give the Pixel a hard look.

I love the idea of having all of the apps that I normally use on the iPhone (Google Search, Google Maps, Google Photos, Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, etc baked right into the OS, where they're able to be used as the default app. Nothing sucks more than receiving a location link and having Apple open Apple Maps by default. I can't stand Siri, and I just think Google software seems to be in a better and more innovative place than Apple right now.

My only hangup is iMessage. It's literally the only thing keeping me from leaving Apple.

90% of my contacts have iPhones, and iMessage is just a lot faster and handles large photos, videos, etc much better than regular SMS. If there's no cellular data, iMessage works on WiFi with no problem.

More importantly, iMessage allows me to message with my parents - both of who have iPads - which is super easy and convenient. My parents aren't going to bother using non-stock iOS apps, so being able to communicate with me through the stock Message app is a huge plus for us. Also, I absolutely love the ability to send voice memos back and forth to friends via iMessage...as well as seeing when they're typing a response. And because 90% of the people I know use iPhones, they all use iMessage too. It's just the easiest way to communicate iPhone to iPhone.

So, I guess my question is, how do the Android users here handle the fact that Google's messaging situation is such a mess? I'm a real big fan of using stock apps rather than third party apps, so the idea of using stuff like FB Messenger or WhatsApp is a huge turn off to me...so what happens when you guys have a 3-minute video that you want to send to some friends? Do you have to use a third party chat app for that?

On my android phones I just use SMS, haven't needed to use anything else. My family all use iPhones and they're the only ones I would share a long video with, so I use my iPhone and iMessage with them.

Crazy story:

Went into an EE store yesterday to ask when display model of Google Pixel would come in.

"What's a Pixel? Never heard of it. Who makes it?"

True story! o_O

Can new owners speak to the unlimited photos back up?

How does that work? It just gets tied to the Gmail account you log in with on your pixel?

I hope to get a play in the next few hours with whatever Verizon and BB have on display.

Color me anxious, the last device I knew I needed to buy almost immediately after trying was the s7 Edge. We'll see if the Pixels strike me that way.

Got some hands on this morning.

First, let me say the blue Pixel looks amazing. The blue really pops but in a mature and slick way; I'm rather impressed by the color. The black one -- the one I'm most interested in -- wasn't available on display, but the silver-white was and that was fine. It's probably my least favorite color. Wish I could've seen the black.

Anyway, the device is quite lovely in the hand. The wedge-ness of it really lends to ergonomics. Screen looked great as far as I can tell. And the camera was indeed fast and looked to take good shots. The hardware is solidly built. Design-wise, perhaps I'm getting used to it with all this exposure, but it really didn't look that atrocious. In some ways, this is the 6P visor all over again -- awkward and shocking in photos, but rather pleasant and more subtle in person than you might think. I regret not being able to test the speaker. I forgot about it.

On the software side, frankly, 7.1 looks and feels boring. But it did fly as reviews have promised. The thing felt lean compared to my S7E and TouchWiz. Also, the pop up shortcuts are really nice and I can see getting a lot of use out of them. I've confirmed that the bars on the right side of the menus don't allow you to do anything; I thought perhaps they'd let you re-order the shortcuts that pop up, but I couldn't get that to happen. Pressing and dragging them did nothing and holding down on them created the shortcut icon. Perhaps someone can correct me on this. I didn't get to test Google Assistant. The swipe up to get to the app drawer is as smooth and intuitive as it looks -- I really like this change. And pulling down on the notification shade from the Pixel imprint reader on the back took some getting used to, but I could see that once learned, it'll be really helpful, especially on the Pixel XL.

About the XL, btw, I got to handle that too and didn't spend as much time with it but came away impressed. It's less comfortable to use than my S7E, but still felt doable. Given its size, I think it puts the iPhone Plus to shame.

One last note, the bezels didn't bother me as much as I thought they would.

Anyway, I'm sure you guys who are getting devices will go more in depth, but those are my initial impressions. Basically, it seems it's everything the reviews are promising.

Seriously, if only it had waterproofing...

Thanks for the info. It seems like a much better device then what everyone thought it would be. Sure it's a little boring, but that kind of seems to be the theme this year. Everyone is just refining their design, or giving us something similar to the most popular phone. I can handle that. Most look great.

How did the screen compare to the Galaxy? Can the camera launch as fast?

I honestly like my S7E screen better. S7E colors pop more and the brightness felt like it was radiating compared to the Pixels as max brightness.

Having said that, the Pixel screens weren't bad, especially the XL. The XL looked much closer to my S7E. The regular Pixel screen looked fine and dandy but didn't seem as impressive to me. I don't know, maybe I'm not used to seeing a smaller screen anymore, too? Or maybe it's psychological cause I know it's lower resolution? Still good though.
