Hi all

Next issue with my new 16 Pro Max. Night mode with 2s exposure or longer with ProRAW enabled often leads to a completely grey image.

Anyone else with this issue?

I haven’t seen it myself but that feels like more of an issue with the Photos/Camera apps than the files themselves. Here is what I would try in no particular order:
  • Hard rebooting the phone
  • Assuming you have iCloud sync turned on, can you try going to the Photos app or iCloud.com on another device and see if they load there?
  • Try exporting one to a different format and emailing to yourself

The photos are broken and cannot be downloaded from iCloud.

Same issue here, did u find any solution so far?

No solution yet.

Appears that there is a bug with the post processing of night mode shots that have a longer exposure time. Only happens on the 48MP sensors, not on 5x. They first show up correctly and a few seconds later just turn completely grey/broken.

I have reported this to Apple.

During the day, Proraw have also strange artifacts, when zooming the photo at the maximum. Like photo resolution is not 48mp or is pixelated. Only happens with native camera. Other apps, the 48mp is crispen and defined. Did you notice that as well? Thanks.

I haven't done much ProRAW 48 on the 16 Pro Max yet. I will report back when I have tested it.

Right now I have some really bad issues with my favorite camera app - ProCamera. It has not been updated for the 16 Pro Max yet, so only 1x and 5x works (with some serious quirks in the interface). However - it triggers some kind of bug in the phone that makes it shut down completely. Not reboot - shutdown.

Never had that issue before on any iPhone.

I suspect this is not an iPhone 16 Pro Max issue but rather a rare iOS issue. Found many threads about it online but no real solution. Most advice is to check storage but I have 1TB free on iCloud and 200GB free on the phone.

For me this only happens when I shoot low light ProRAW with longer exposure times. But not always. Sometimes it works. Super annoying. I guess resetting the phone completely is the only way forward.

Just made the strangest discovery.

I spent some time today trying to find why some ProRAW astro shots turns out as corrupted grey images. Tested all possible settings for the camera app. None worked. Except turning off RAW and then images saved correctly.

Then I started a screen recording to capture the issue. And to my surprise the images now save properly. But only when a screen recording is running simultaneously.

This is such a crazy bug. Never experienced anything like it.

It is 100% reproducable.

@nunolikeapple try this on your phone…

Okay so I can confirm that this bug is triggered if ProRAW is enabled and you try to focus on something far away.

Just read about a guy that had climbed a mountain and came home and half of the photos taken were just grey boxes. So sad.

Apple really messed up this time.

Apparently this can be solved by resetting the phone from recovery mode using a computer. Will test tonight and report back.

You are just uncovering all the iPhone 16 Pro photo bugs. Makes me nervous of getting a 16 Pro (as I want a robust camera).

I had to cancel my restore attempt.

Upon connecting my phone to the computer and doing "Restore and Update" it takes a full 5 hours to download the firmware file. Incredibly slow and I am on a 1000mbit connection (tested with speedtest).

Update: It seems that the mac is still downloading the update in the background so I can do the restore once it is downloaded.

Right now performing a full DFU restore on my 16 Pro Max to see if it solves the ProRAW issues.

Bad news. The full restore did not solve the issue. Still, when focusing far away and shooting in low light with ProRAW the image is not saved. Just a grey square. 18.0.1 is now the only hope.

Gotta love Apple support.

ME: "I have tried everything including a full reset and restore today"
AS: "Can you try restarting the device?"
ME: "I just did a full reset and restore using Recovery Mode with my Macbook - it is restarted recently"
AS: "Step 1 is to try to restart the device"

Sighs.

I have now been in contact with Apple Senior support in Ireland and that was quite a difference from the first line support. They have escalated this issue to the engineering team and they took some detailed logs off my phone. I also sent them a screen recording clearly showing the issue. Hopefully this will lead to some more insight into the issue and a possible fix.

Fixed with 18.0.1 or not? Thanks

Hey I am having the exact same issue.
Did you get any response or fix from Apple for your ticket?
Is this a device issue that could be resolved with a new unit?
