When I ride the battery lasts about 4 hours. That is enough for me in 99% of my rides. I do not have a solution for rain yet because I usually ride when the weather is nice. However, there seem to be water proof cases for the iPhone and I plan to get one that fits my bike mount.

I understand the appeal of the Garmin for people who do not own an iPhone. My point was that the Edge 305 costs about 30x the price of my cyclometer app from the AppStore. That is too much a difference for me.

Agree to the battery time. For me, the battery time my iPhone lasts while using B.iCycle on my rides is mostly enough ...

I love this app and I'm not even think of bying a garmin which costs me 300 bucks ....

I'm currently thinking about buying a waterproof iPhone case as well.

These guys are providing waterproof cases for different gadges and of course especially for us iPhone users.

Has anyone experiences with them?

I'm not sure if the otterbox solution is really water proof. They seem to be made for shock and dust protection in particular. Have a look at the Aquapac solution. I consider to combine that with my bike mount:

That would allow to see the screen while biking, so I could use my cyclometer app B.iCycle in the rain.

My problem though would be enough batter life after the bike ride. Also, is there a way to use a HR monitor with the iphone? That is almost more important to me than anything when training....

... found this on an german webpage. seems a little bit geeky so far, but maybe something like this could be a solution for the battery problem ...

HR monitor would be great and there are hints that the developers of B.iCycle are working on it since the iPhone got opened by apple with OS 3.0 ...

I would think that AAPL, if they were so inclined, could easily manufacture a bicycle adapter/application that monitored speed, distance, splits, rise/fall, and route taken. It could also keep pace by GPS. The device could just count wheel revolutions and the interface could be programmed by the user to account for wheel diameter. I doubt it will ever come to fruition however.

Ant+

So, there's already an emerging standard for cycling and training equipment called ANT+ (you can think of it as Bluetooth for workout gear).

And, I totally agree that something could be made that would work with an iPhone/iPod Touch/Nano... it just needs to be suggested enough to these companies that are creating biking gear. In my mind, they make a huge markup from the hardware, so maybe there's less of an interest to make a software + adapter solution, but you would think that the Apple crowd would pay for it if "it just worked".

I think the biggest problem is that "hard core" cyclists are often concerned with weight and the iPhone is not a feather weight piece of equipment. But, I think it would be an training tool. It would really complete against the Garmin market.

Personally, I would love to see Cateye build an iPhone adapter...
