The F was a groundbreaking camera and historically important. It wasn't the first 35mm SLR, it wasn't the first with an automatic aperture, it wasn't the first with a coupled meter(option), it wasn't the first with a metal focal plane shutter with a maximum speed of 1/1000, and it wasn't the first with an instant return mirror.

To be honest, I was sold on Nikon after watching Michelangelo Antonioni's "Blow-Up" as a senior in high school. :D

The camera looks attractive, and it's certainly "retro", but one concession they should have made, design-wise, was to include some kind of "grip" on the shutter side as modern digital cameras have. Or perhaps have an add-on "accessory grip" to enable this.

If Nikon doesn't make a grip no doubt third parties will, it's easy to do. My hope is that Nikon supports it with more APSC lenses that are compact and fit into the aesthetic while also fitting in with the normal lineup.

Back in the days of the FM/FE, etc you had motor drives that could add a grip if you were so inclined. A few cameras like the FA and FG had a detachable grip. Neither was much, but did give a bit of palm "swell". One of the things that made the Df an ugly duckling but still very useable is a fairly generous "swell" on the right.

Sound like it is mostly a magnesium body, but with some odd plasticky parts in places. The dials are apparently solid aluminum with the numbers etched into it, so at least it wins some quality feel points. Still, I get the feeling it is aimed at younger buyers who want a "retro" camera for the novelty of it. No IBIS, but offers modern video spec--seems like they hope to hit the influencer crowd.

Yes, I think the influencer crowd is definitely who they are going after, and I hope that groups likes the camera so we can stop with the "Nikon is behind the curve" mentality that seems to be out there right now.

People love to see a big name struggle. As I'm not an influencer I don't think I'm the target audience. The only influence I have is broccoli or cauliflower tonight with Mrs AFB?

I think they're targeting long time Nikon fans as well, with all the manual dials and retro colour scheme.

Edit: Also I just noticed that you can hide the back LCD screen by flipping it around, perfect for Nikon film camera fans.
