Thanks for the info. I've been using Sony for a while, started with compact cameras & then upgraded to the A65 & 99. All had GPS builtin, so I'm surprised the A7 & A9 don't.

Suspect it is a lack of space thing. The 65 and 99s are bigger than the a7 and a9.

The voice of experience? On both counts!

Enjoy. The way a camera feels in your hand is an important part of the choice.

Yes I have had three mangled sony screens in my time... :-(

I have a screen protector on my Nikon's but I've never taken them off. Why did you need to?

Two of them aged and 9ver time.lifted in the corners and got dust under them. Third one was taken off by someone I sold to... Had a barny with then about that very question... No need to remove it so why?

Okay. I was just curious.

Mine have never moved since I put them on. Can't remember the brand, but I got them when I bought the cameras at TPS.

Possible, but I remember a compact Sony camera years ago, can't remember the specific model, that had builtin GPS.

I just find it interesting that Sony seems like such a big(ger) player now. With SLRs, Nikon & Canon seemed to reign. Now, with mirrorless taking off, Sony seems like the go to company.

The power of advertising. Sony are not selling as many units as Cannon or Olympus according to what I read here.

Would be interested to see them broken down as a percentage of all cameras sold and also a measure of year on year market share growth.

For years we ignored a competitor at work because they only had 1% of market, then 5%, then 34%... They creep up on you and when you are at 60+ you feel invulnerable. Sharp changes.

Yes I do feel subjectively that everyone is moving to Sony yet you look round and it doesnt feel like everyone is carrying one - if that makes sense?

I think Sony are very good at making that seem how things are going.
Putting on big events for camera launches, signing up influencers and generally spending top dollar.
I'm not knocking Sony btw. I think it's good what they are doing. But I know it's NEVER the camera that holds me back!

Lol.. i meant the person buying the camera "why take the protector off" not so why you asking... :)

I think I may have cheaped out on mine... So the adhesive wasnt the best. My bad

Well worth doing, not a huge difference in the camera size, but you essentially get a 2.8 lens for around the same weight as the Sony f4's. Long story short, looks like Sony A7 III has won out though.....just prefer the way it feels in my hands.

That's interesting, I've tried the first two generation A7 series and was always disappointed with the way it felt in the hand. Canons and Nikons fit much better and all the controls feel just right, the A7 just felt like a box with buttons. These things are personal but I'm going to have to try a Mk3 now!

Now that’s an interesting point. I agree that a camera doesn’t hold you back, but it can influence your mojo. Great camera but left in the cupboard does not equal great photos. I’ve learned a few things along the way really.....not least that I need to put more photos on here in POTD or the weekly comp, use my Instagram account more or other social media. I’m a stalker....come to the MR photo thread every day pretty much, but rarely post any pics. Mojo lost, but hoping to find it again.

This remains one of my concerns. The new A7 is like a shrunken Nikon, never tried the previous ones. Buttons are in the right place, but just smaller. Hoping muscle memory retraining won’t take too long.

Yep the first A7 was a nightmare for button placement. Including the shutter on the top. You needed to be double jointed to not hit the movie button while holding it. Thankfully they have moved the movie button now too so no more movies from palm presses.I hope the buttons have nice affirmative clicks now too rather than the spongy feel of before.

@Moakesy yes please post more in POTD good to stalk to get the feel but a party is more fun if you dance rather than just stand against the wall... :)

If button placement and grips and feeling good in the hand is important to you, then again, consider Fuji. I think their controls placement approach is superb. I keep going into the menus to find stuff forgetting there is a button there that does it. (again enjoy the sony menu system. make use of your custom buttons and function menu).

Button placement / feel is very important. I found out a friend of a friend just went from Canon to Fuji, and I'm seeing him on Friday. I'm going to ask him to bring his camera around so I can play, he went for the X-T2.

The D850 has gone, sold to a mate!! Nice to know it's gone to a good home. His D810 has >100k shutter count...so it will be used as it's intended to be. Also got a decent offer for my D750 from mpb.com, which I'll probably take, so will very soon be camera-less for a bit.

X-T2 is a great camera. You can fit a L bracket on it that makes the grip deeper. Enjoy it.

I hope the Sony arrives soon before the "no camera" sweats and twitching starts... :)

You had a current generation excellent body and lens. If you want to reduce size/weight, Sony is not going to make much of a difference once a lens is attached. Especially if you go after one of their "one lens fits all solutions" approach ala 70-200. If you want to reduce size and use your camera a lot more, Fuji or m4/3. I went from a D800 to Fuji some time ago, never ever looked back. After 35 years of shooting Nikon.

But sounds more like a GAS attack to me. Do what feels right, either system can handle macro and nature. Neither is going to change what prompts you to pull a camera out of a drawer. And neither is going to have any discernible impact on IQ. Though you may have to adjust to Sony's sterile color render and may end up spending more time in post. A criteria lacking in most people's system changes. Only to discover their shiny new equipment doesn't output images they like.

With the 2.8 lenses I agree, bit quite a big weight difference if I go for the f4's. It could well be GAS attack...I have been known to suffer badly with that condition. :D

No absolute commitment to Sony yet, but they are still in the lead. Looking forward to seeing the Fuji tomorrow night. I'm certainly not against going m4/3, so who knows where I'll end up.

As mentioned before, the whole reason for this is that the camera is too big and heavy when I go away in the camper van, which I do pretty much every other weekend in the summer. So small and light is the big reason for change, not to upgrade on quality etc....I was pretty much top of the shop with both glass and camera already. However, I know I won't be happy if I lost too much IQ. (I'm not saying m4/3 will mean this).

So there is a middle ground there I need to find.

I think they may supply a better sensor physically, but the software that extracts the detail is on the shoulders of the manufacturer using it right? So I think Nikon writing their own software for the camera means they may never be quite getting the best out of it. Maybe? don't know this one is a stretch... :)

Correct. Pentax K1 uses the 36mp Sony sensor that the Nikon D800 was using which is 2012 generation tech but the image quality coming out of the K1 is as good as any D850 or A7R3 i've seen in real world photos.

I love how enthusiastic you are about the Fuji. I’ve been telling you bitches for ages how good they are :)
