In theory has.

What has not been confirmed is if there are and restrictions in the motherboard bios.

Agreed. No one knows what will happen if you use a CPU not purchased from Apple. I assume as long as it is one of the exact same models currently offered you would have no issues, but what I really wonder is what will happen if you tried something like one of the 10 core models....

So what's the exact same 8 core model? I'm so close to order a quad and just upgrade it myself...

if base on past Mac Pro, the CPU is upgradable with no worries on the bios.

And if you worry so much then get the same exact 6/8/12 core CPU model that is been offered by Apple and it will 100% work.

Thanks! Sadly I can't find it anywhere to buy

i think for a while it wasn't even being listed on the intel site.. speculations were that it was only going to be available to manufacturers (or smthng) but now it's starting to show up.

i don't follow it too closely.. one of these other guys will know more about it.

I did the nice long thread on a 2010 mac pro cpu upgrade. I just look at OWC tear down and it looks like a cpu upgrade can be done.

I am willing to do a long thread like last time but It will take me 60 days to get the cash to do it.

yeah I will start picking up discounted apple gift cards on ebay.

and looking to see how low I can do this for. last time it was pretty cost effective once we got to mac pro refurbs. which is at least 2 months from now.

i would love to configure a pro the way I want.

a hex core cpu.
1 video card
2 sticks of 16gb ram
1 1 tb pci ssd
and in the empty video slot a second pcie ssd.
