Same for me.. that why I'm going for 512gb Apple SSD instead. Then TB HDD raid 0 which could hit 350MB/s for all my work which make more sense since all these TB SSD are also around that speed so why bother spending so much with limited space for TB SSD when TB HDD could hit that speed too.

sonnet quotes that their tempo and pro SSD cards can achieve speeds of 450MB/s read and 325MB/s write. a RAID0 on their tempo pro is quoted as 700 read & 560 write.

if true, that would be faster than a typical HDD RAID0.

i've got a tempo and tempo pro sitting here in the packaging. i'm deciding whether to open them or to use the unopened accelsior pro. i do not yet have a TB enclosure. (also debating whether i want a pegasus R4 (diskless) instead of something like the sonnet TB/TB2 enclosure (echo express II se).

Did you look at the price?

(Echo Express Pro = $799) + (Tempo SSD Pro = $299), Total = $1098 w/o SSD yet

Try adding 2 x Samsung 840 Evo 1TB = 545.99 x 2 = $1091.98

Grand Total = $2189.98

You better off buying the 1TB from Apple Tax instead and with $2189.98 you can consider buying another base nMP too...

the echo express ii se is actually $499 (450 street), but i take your point.

i was mainly responding to say that SSD, even a single drive externally, can beat HDD RAID0.

for your HDD RAID you'll need an enclosure, no?

one advantage for some is that using a tempo pro with SSDs allows for one to selectively upgrade the drives.

i need more than 1TB of storage, so i cannot simply upgrade to the 1TB internal option and call it good (let alone the fact that i do not want to have everything on one drive anyway). as a result, i need some external enclosure. i suspect most considering the nMP would be the same way; it may not be fair to include the cost of the enclosure in the comparison.

sure, we do have to buy it but we need something--whether a pegasus, sonnet, OWC, or whatever.

Well true, but given the price to really run SSD at 700MB/s it just too expensive at current stage. Unless you business really depend on it then different story.

I'm using Laice 2big 6TB which only cost me $550 for half the speed and cost different of $1600.

For me, at the moment the speed that 2big is giving is good enough. I will hold and wait for the price to come down before making the move.

- pegasus j2 could hit 700MB/s but the biggest size is just 512gb. For j4, I can't find result on the speed.
- OWC still waiting for their TB to be out. But I heard horror story of their USB3 enclosure with OSX.

i hear you. i was just responding to the comment you made about SSDs not really being able to run much faster than a HDD RAID0.

HDDs are, of course, cheaper, but for me to get the same speeds i need to run 2-4 HDDs compared to one SSD, whether internal or external. i still need an enclosure no matter what i do.

as a result, the cost difference, for me, is less than your calculations.

it does come down to everyone's tolerance for performance vs cost. i also view lower operating temperatures of SSDs (low or no fan) as a plus for my environment.

haha I think you hear wrongly. What I'm pointing out is that the current SSD on most TB enclosure are around 400MB/s which is just a waste of money. And to get those full speed that SSD capable of is just too expensive. Not to mention just limited choice.

AFAIK...

1) The Flash SSD in the nMP has an Apple Specific connector. Not an industry standard. This will limit availability for upgrades.
2) The Flash SSD in the nMP is manufactured by Samsung and is based on the XP941 NGFF product.
3) Many have said that 2014 is the year for NGFF / M.2 to take off. I'm still waiting.. Availability is still severely constrained if non-existent.
