Maybe ebay is possible?

You should think about that term, "outdated". The nMP will have a 2 year old video card when it is released. The only thing new about it is the form-factor and the processor, and the processor is not going to be that much faster than the old Mac Pro.

GPU is much more important than CPU for gaming. Therefore an old Mac Pro with a modern GPU will blast the nMP out of the water for games.

Maybe you should go with a Mac Mini and a Gaming PC? You'll save a ton of money and can get a top of the line gaming machine.

I feel like we're all clobbering you with trying to discourage you. I'm sorry for that.

It's ok :) My wife is also discouraging me... But i'm very stubborn... I've been dreaming with this machine since the day my imac was returned...

And i have to admit that i'm not a SERIOUS gamer... I play at maximum 4 hours per week...

Thank you all for all the elucidations but i still think that i will give up on a better FPS (which we can get on the gamers pcs) to be using such a fantastic machine like the nMPRO.

One other think that makes me go this route is because i have a plenty of apple hardware working together, so i don't see myself coming back to a windows machine, specially because in the past i had a lot of headache with them!

Throw it in a bag with some vac accessories. Nobody will even notice it.

lol!!

Great idea! :)

The heart wants what the heart wants. A 6-core D700 machine would do everything you want and it will look cool doing it. It's like building an off road rig from a mercedes….why not

I'm between a 4 core and a 6 core... Really waiting for the first benchmarks to appear...

I meant that I use my computer mostly for text production, research and, like I said before, gaming. Based on that, I wanted to give you all the idea that obviously I don't work with professional graphics and video apps, and even on this situation, I want to go with the nMPRO.

It's your money but a MP is such an incredible waste of money for you and not the best option. If you take away gaming, it sounds like the most basic Mac Mini would be more than enough for what you need. You could probably get a Mac Mini, build a pretty darn good gaming PC, a nice 27" 1440p monitor and a good KVM (that supports higher resolution DVI displays) for less than the cost of the base MP.

Also, the fact the the new MP GPUs can be replaced doesn't do you any good when nobody is making a GPU that will fit. That's a proprietary card in a niche product. Nobody's going to be making GPUs for that thing except Apple.

I understand what your're saying and agree...

The problem is that i'm a little psycho about style and design of products... Every single furniture or electronic that i've put inside my house are modern design pieces...

I love music and try to make every eletronic piece match the beoplay a9 i have in my sitting room and the beosound 8 i have in my home office, in a modern slick look.

That's another reason i'm really looking for the macpro, because i really think it's going to match everything by adding its beautiful signature to my home office. If i decide to buy a mac mini and a gaming pc, i really don't know where i'll be putting the last one and i really think that it's not going to match my taste and style. :(

I am in kind of the same boat, but since the nMP is very expensive, I decided to upgrade my 4,1 MP with a GTX 780 instead, until reliable benchmarks came out, and Apple has had a chance to update the drivers in OSX.

Currently a 4,1 or 5,1 MP with a GTX 680 pretty much beats the pants off anything out there even the latest iMac. GTX Titan or 780 will keep you pretty happy for at least 6 months, which is enough time for true benchmarks to come out. You should watch barefeats.com as they do a lot of Mac gaming benchmarks.

I'm hoping for some divine intervention that the nMP is going to blow game FPS through the roof, or that Apple eventually comes out with GTX GPU boards instead of AMD ones. Then, I will be spending. A LOT!

Thank you for the tips... If i had a Macpro 4.1 like you, I would be a lot more patient and wouldn't be buying the nMPRO now in December... The problem is that I'm trying to live my life with a macbook air 11, so I'm in a little hurry to get, at least, a new thunderbolt display while our beloved nMPRO goes out on sale.

The other problem is that Apple resists to launch a new display either, so I'm stuck in this sad situation.

I 100% guaranty you'll be better off not getting a nMP for gaming!!

Yep.

The new Mac Pro will be a BEAST! A hugely fast workstation which will be the ultimate OpenCL rendering machine.

But, it will not be the ultimate OpenGL gaming machine.

Of course, the Dual D700 will perform very good in games, but not as good as you would think paying the cash for it.
The Dual D700 will probably perform similar (a bit better) than one 7970.

One D700 is NOT a gaming card. The 7970 is.
OS X gaming will not support two GPU's for some time.

I would lvd to have a maxed out Mac Pro. Who wouldn't?

But, most Xeon Cores and 1/2 the GPU's are doing nothing during games. But you are paying a premium for it.

I am very happy with my maxed out 2013 iMac.
Yes, I will replace it in 2 - 3 years. Good!

I will love my newer iMac then even more! :)

I must admit although i use my Mac Pro mainly for Aperture work (by work i mean personal usage not paid work) i do enjoy a few good games on the old Mac Pro too. My reason for getting a Mac Pro is that i want to use my own display and a Mac Mini (which i also own) just can't cut a huge amount of Aperture work (either in storage space or GPU performance).

Getting back to the game side of thing though, I have to agree with everyone else that the new Mac Pro doesn't sound the best machine for the job. To be honest my 2009 Mac Pro with a GTX 680 will probably best just as handy for a fraction of the price. Plus there is the opportunity that i can keep upgrading my graphics card in the future (if companies keep making them) which is very unlikely for the new Mac Pro.

Although this argument is unlikely to sway you, I hope you enjoy your purchase as it will be an awesome machine.

If you want to game, buy a gaming PC, they'll be cheaper, more future proof than an New mac Pro, and more built to the task, and cool looking

All of the above makers offer very expandable, cool looking and well made computers. And all of the above will custom build a machine to any spec you want, if your willing to pay.

If he wanted a PC he wouldn't be asking such a question here - this is still called MAC Rumors.

Thanks for all the attention

I'm sure there are many here that would love to hear first-hand how the new Mac Pro is for gaming, whether it supports Crossfire in Windows, etc. So, I, for one, hope you're among the first to pre-order and report back here with your findings! :)

I think you can pick up a 4,1 or 5,1 MP for cheap these days. Much cheaper than a new iMac and upgrading it with a GTX 680 or 780 if you want to spend more is not a bad decision. My current thinking is to skip this year's MP models and buy the refresh. If that's the kind of timeframe, then you're looking at $1-2k that will last you at least 12 months. Maybe 16-18 months if Apple doesn't refresh at exactly 12 months.

As much as Windows machines are better for gaming, I just cannot stand going back to Windows anymore. OSX all the way.

It should support Crossfire under Windows providing you're using D500's or D700's, as both should be Tahiti based, and I believe these can do Crossfire over PCIe.

Even if that were true ( I do not believe it is ), the PSU will definitely not like crossfire. It'll have to clock down to reduce power by 20-33%. Crossfire is a total power hog.

The PSU is only 450 watts. TPD on Equivalent cards is ~270W each (540 total) plus 130W for the CPU, for a total of 670W.
