Glad you made it clear you had the ‘aluminum’ model. My 2017 ‘cardboard’ iMac is really struggling. Think I’ll opt for the aluminum version next time.
2007 was the year Apple switched to aluminum and glass on the front. The poster you quoted is just happy he doesn't have one of the Late 2006 (white plastic) models sold into 2007 that Apple tried to force into obsolescence years ago.
[doublepost=1541437427][/doublepost]And speaking of forced obsolescence, I can see that happening with MacOS requiring a T2 by 2025. It may seem like a long time from now, but the 2017 iMac will continue to outperform plenty of supported Macs such as the Core i3 Mac mini (Late 2018) and 13" Mac laptops.

Hi guys, i had no luck in the other thread so i’m trying to ask a question here after months spent reading this forum: no new imacs, so would it make sense to buy a used 2017 27 i7 imac, for 1600€ (covered with warranty until june 2019) and then resell it when the new imacs come out? or save the money and stick with my 2011 i7 macbook pro? i manly use it to edit raws in lightroom and photoshop, and with the 2018/19 updates sometimes i have crashes when i’m using both apps at the same time. I also need a better display than the one i have (an old 1080 samsung)

Thanks for your tips,

Carlo

If you need it, do it. iMac is a fantastic machine.

Apple doesn’t need the T2 to do that. They already cut off support for Macs beyond a certain age with every new MacOS release.

T2 is another convenient hardware cut-off point (like Metal-capable GPUs), and requiring the T2 could make it much more difficult to run the OS on unsupported Macs.

It also means the iMac Pro (Late 2017) will likely be supported for longer than the other 2017 Macs.

And requiring a T2 chip in a Mac to run a future version of macOS is many years out. People are so worried about the future they appear to forget about the present time. Be happy, just for today.

Apple continues to release security updates for older macOS releases. For at least 8 years, we've seen a pattern where they always release security updates for the last two versions of macOS as well as the most recent. Since Mojave was announced at WWDC, OS X El Capitan has not received any subsequent security updates – and we can see this from the release of macOS Mojave 10.14.1, where only 10.13 High Sierra and 10.12 Sierra received joint security updates at the same time.

Both macs released has T2 and SSD standard.. you know what that means, there’s a new iMac coming with both theses technologies.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I'm expecting a redesign of some sort next year. I'm hoping they get rid of the chin or at least make the bezels a lot thinner.

now that we saw Vega20 performances....what can we expect from the next imac?
maybe Vega20 for the 21.5" and Vega40 for the 27" ?

For the 21” it’d be logical to use the same cards as in 15” MacBook Pro so yes.

Is the Vega40 already announced?

The i3 mini outperforms a few of the iMacs from 2017.

Yes, by a moderate margin on the cpu side, but on the gpu side the mini is completely crushed by the iMacs ... unless of course you pay another $800 (at least) for an egpu.

Oh, and also, I am able to upgrade that 2017 iMac with a 2tb SSD myself for $300, while on the min, the only way to get that size of SSD storage is to pay an extra $1400 on the BTO options.

Upgrading the ram on the 27 inch iMac is a snap, much easier than on the Mini, and costs less as well.

And I haven't even mentioned that with the iMac, you get one of the best screens in the business along with the ride.
