I had the same problem with an iPhone 8+. What I discovered is that when I traded in my old phone it had not been deleted from the icloud backups even though it was turned off. I went to Setting, Icloud, Storage, Manage Storage and discovered my old phone was still listed. I deleted that backup and the old iPhone from Icloud and now it it backs up automatically.

Reactions: Newtons Apple
I just realized yesterday that my 8+ hadn't backed up since Feb 20th. That's when I started using my wireless charger. I turned off the automatic backup, restarted the phone, then turned auto backup on and it backed up. Hope this helps.

iPhone X doesn’t automatically back up to iCloud if it’s on the wireless charger?

Is that right? If so wtf Apple?!

I presume this is the same for the 8 and 8 plus…

For me, I need to allow the phone to charge overnight. One or two hours won't do it.

iPhone 8+ and my wife's iPhone X, both use wireless chargers for charging overnight. I don't check them every morning, but when I do bother to look, they show successful backups and gives me the time. Never had an issue that I'm aware if,

I have to manually backup my phone, as the only time I use Wifi is for iOS backups or AirDrop. I am surprised people are still using Wifi as much as they are, given the availability of unlimited plans.

And I'm the exact opposite. I wonder why folks pay the exorbitant prices the carriers charge when even Verizon's own studies show the average person's phone barely uses 2 GB per month. I'm virtually always on Wifi. Mine or someone else's. It's the rare business or area that I visit that doesn't provide free wife. I get by on a 4GB plan without a worry. AT&T, Verizon and the others have done a fantastic sales job on the average customer. But everyone has different needs.

Unlimited plan with Verizon would cost me over $80 more monthly. I live in a brick house and work in an office building where the service isn’t great so yeah, I’m on WiFi mostly.

Make sure your device is unlocked. If it was off and then turned back on by the power it is locked and won't connect to wifi until you unlock it.

Even though it is recommended (to extend battery life) not to exceed 98% charge on the battery and then let it go down to near 0%. if you leave it charging for 2 hours or more you will reach 100%.

Please do not spread erroneous information on battery charging. There is enough bad information out there already.

It is not what Apple recommends to charge your phone.

When I am at home my WiFi is preferred. Blistering fast compared to LTE. My house, security cameras, laptops, iPads and desktops LOVE WiFi.

Antiquated advice for old battery management tech. iPhones (as well as iPads, MBPs, etc) are smart in how they let your battery charge.

My X (which I got on launch day) was at 99% (or 98%, I don't recall) battery health when I traded it in for my XS Max (which I also got on launch day).

I plug it in when I go to sleep and let it charge all night, every night. I also, out of habit, plug it into the charger in my car when I drive around and often set it on the wireless charger by my desk.

My XS Max is still at 100% battery health.
