The no-backlit keyboard was a heartbreaker for me, too, after waiting nearly a year for the new Air, and a dealbreaker so far. I've used my wife's MBP with the backlit keyboard off to see if I can get used to it; so far, it's terrible for me. I'm sure this has been answered in one of the other threads, but I can't find the answer (Scottsdale, are you there?): Is it physically possible to restore the backlit keyboard to this version of the MBA, or does the new thinner profile preclude it? Thanks.

So, I'm still wondering: Does anyone know definitively (like by an email from Steve's iPhone or something) that the new Air profile could still accommodate a backlit keyboard?
And if so, WTF? Put it back.

There are some posts that have suggested that the backlit keyboard would add ~2-5mm to the width of the MBA (the same 5mm they shaved off from RevC to RevD).

But seriously -- the original MBA was thin enough - no need for Apple to kill of a great feature to save 2mm of space. :S

I never understood why people always complained about not having a keyboard light of some sort. If any of you actually spent all day on your computers typing, hell, not even all day. Just an hour or so a day. I would have thought some of you would be able to just touch type already. Sure the backlight definitely looks cool. I still just don't think it's as big of a deal as some people are making it.

Even for touch typists it's nice to be able to see the keys. Also, the dual purpose function keys differ between Mac models (and previous MacBook Airs) so it would be nice to see what they are.

Can you retrofit the keyboard backlight parts from an old MBA to the new one?

No, 'cause there's different parts, (Power Button on the new keyboard, etc...) and there'd be no power connector on the new Mobo for the old Keyboard's backlight.

To some, this seems like a non-issue, to others it's a feature greatly missed. A very common place, for the air, is in-flight during night time, or when folks are sleeping. That backlit does come in handy when you're stuck computing in a dark place. My 13" MBP is so cool for doing that, so I do understand the usefulness.

I think this is exactly right. I've had my MBA 13" ultimate for a couple of weeks and, on overnight flights, I did miss it a little. At the end of the day it's not that important but there are times when I would have liked it.

I liked the 1.6 lbs less bulk even better though-

I initially felt the same as most of you; I actually held off for a couple of weeks while I was using my old MBA with the backlight in the keyboard switched off. My conclusion is that with a little training, I write almost as good without backlight as I do with.

I used http://www.sense-lang.org/typing/tutor/index.php?lang=EN to train myself a little, giving me a better writing technique.

The form factor and the better screen far outweighs the lack of keyboard backlight and automatic adjustment of the screen backlight.
