FML.

Today, I went to work as a lifeguard. My last day of work as a lifeguard this summer, in fact. Today, the pool wasn't open, we were simply closing it, the pool cover was on and all.

We were cleaning up when a kid came to swim, he came from awhile away and looked really hot, so I let him swim. Forgetting I had the cover still on, I ran to take the cover off the pool, shoving my iPhone in the pocket of my hoodie.

I rolled the blanket off. As I pulled the last 10%, my phone fell out of my pocket, landing hard on the concrete on the side of the pool. I grimaced. That's going to leave a rather decent scratch on my new 3G S. *sigh* But no, what's this? It bounced a good three feet from the concrete, over the small barrier separating concrete and pool, INTO the pool. I almost collapsed. I could deal with the scratches, not this.

Freaking out, I lunged at the water, sweatpants, hoodie and sneakers still on. I just missed the phone with my grasp as it sunk deeper. Freaking out (this happened so quickly) I dove in, under the cover which was still partly on, fully clothed, to save my phone.

For those of you wondering, this phone SINKS. And I mean SINKS. By the time I got it it hit the bottom. I pushed off the bottom to the surface, almost suffocating when I forgot the cover was still on, I pushed it up and went to the side.

My colleague was dying of laughter. I grimaced at her and looked at the kid who too was laughing hysterically. I, was not.

What's worse? Two years ago I got pushed in the pool with my iPod Nano in my pocket, ruining it. Since then I've had gadget-meets-water nightmares quite frequently. This will not help.

On top of that, I had to work for nine more hours. I tried to power off my phone, but the touch screen wouldn't work. It then said "This device is not compatible with iPhone." or something; no device was plugged in. I wrapped it in my towel, now I'm at home with a bowl of rice and a damaged, pink-sensored iPhone.

FML. I avoided water this whole year. My last day, I wasn't even supposed to get near water, THIS happens.

Try putting it in the airing cupboard for a few days - it worked on my old motorolla when I dropped it in a pond.

I just dropped mine in the river...
:(

My condolences. I had an HTC 8925 that I broke before I purchased my iPhone. The same day that I replaced my HTC with my iPhone my girfriend spilt a glass of water on it. I freaked out as she just watched the water engulf my phone. Luckily I pulled it out of the case before there was any harm done. I feel you pain.

That is a terrible story! If there is any way to open it up, you should and let it air dry for several days. I had the original 5GB iPod, and I had it in my work bag with what I thought was an empty travel mug. The mug had some water in it, and just a bit leaked out of the lid. Some water got in the iPod and it never recovered. I opened it up, and took everything out. After a few days, I reassembled it and managed to get the missing software icon to come on, but the hard drive wouldn't spin up. It would make just a slight grunt when started up. I even then opened up the drive, exposing the platters as a last resort.

At least the iPhone doesn't have any moving parts. Perhaps it can be salvaged? But probably not. Good luck. I feel your pain.

Sorry to hear that...I would had done the same thing you did...but I would had drown since I can't swim....sorry again to hear that...

Just dry it out....my friend got his in the washer and it still works like a champ...

Worst case get 199 ready...walk into Apple Store and you can have a new iphone...:)

a friend of mine dropped her iPhone in a river, completely submerged, it was there for about 10 seconds before someone grabbed it and pulled it out...

still works perfectly

step 1 - DO NOT TURN ON THE DEVICE AT ALL....dont even come close to the power button..

step 2 - drop it in a bag of rice and seal it up...now, dont just drop it on the rice, using something to sit it on top of the rice. Dont want the rice dust to get inside.

step 3 - let it sit for a few days at the least...the rice will absorb the water, but needs time to do so.

step 4 - P R A Y your screen and digitizer isnt dead, or the ear speaker/mic/speaker.

step 5 - keep phone in bag during working hours =) just cause you work at a pool (or did)

This is the best you can do for it...might work, might not.

I'm so sorry. Listen to this story. It might help you feel a wee bit better. I have a younger cousin who had just purchased a new Lexus IS250. Less than a week later, she left a message on the answering machine because I couldn't get to the phone in time. I played the message and it sounded like she was crying and I heard her say she had been in a wreck. Some lady had rear ended her. My husband goes to scene to pick her up and bring her to our house. I took her to the emergency room and to pick up her meds. We told her to soak in a hot bath because she was a little sore. About 10 minutes she got in the bath, I thought I heard her screaming my name...but I wasn't sure. I ran to my room and called her and heard her calling for me and crying. Well, I went in the bathroom and she was in tears with her iphone in her hand. She said "look what I did!" She had forgotten that she had it in her hand while she got in the bath. It was on when she did this and she said it took her a while to wonder what it was that was still in her hand under the water. Then she started laughing hysterically. Poor thing! I took and it and dried it a little with a hair dryer and then put it in a glad bowl thingy covered in rice. It stayed there a few days. While she was at work, I took it out and it still wouldn't turn on so I put in on the charger and let it sit. It came on and has been working just fine since. ;) She's still waiting for the Lexus to come out of the shop.

Thats where I stopped reading.

Indeed. "F" is for "Fiction" at that point. It would be FML if, while the phone was out, you missed a call from Ed McMahon telling you to come get your $10,000,000 check, a text from <supermodel du jour> asking you out, and an email from your boss saying that if you respond first, you'll get that great promotion, otherwise it'll go to Greasy Kenny down the hall. Then it's FML. Otherwise, your toy got wet (allegedly). Hardly life altering...

A pool got on your iPhone...how the heck did that happen?

Anyway just go get a new one for $200 and all will be well.

Bummer that this happened with your phone. However, jumping in to a pool with a cover on it to retrieve a phone is not the brightest thing to do. A phone is replaceable, you are not. Glad you are ok.

What an excellent excuse to upgrade to a 3GS! If you already did before this happened, well, I really feel for you then.

As I read the story about your desperate attempt to rescue the phone, I asked myself, "Wow, I wonder if he saves humans with the same determination?" Sorry, had to say it...haha

Well, I'm a lifeguard, I can swim rather well. ;) It was only 14ft deep, and I just had to go to the sides, push the cover up and get out. It hardly threatened my life... more of an obstacle. :(

That did help, heh. Thanks man. :D

Unfortunately, I did update to a 3G S... two weeks ago. >_<

And of course I save humans with the same determination! Though, I luckily didn't have to this summer. :p

All in all, after days in rice, she still isn't alive. Plus, I scratched the back up something FIERCE, so I don't think I can live with that. I'll pay the $199 and get it replaced. Gah, out hundreds of dollars over an accident. Why me? :(

As a teen, I bought a Psion PDA for close to 200 quid, dropped it in the toilet when I was using it in the bog...

LOL No. She's a brunette. Give her a break. She had a REALLY crappy day. She is actually a very smart young lady.

Poor thing...hope she is ok...that really sucks. I can relate though. Bad things happen, makes us lose our minds a bit. Im glad her phone still works though...

yo! some guy named raven killed hes gf for dropping iphone. that means:
- go kill that girl who laughed
- go kill that hot guy, who wanted to swim!
- take their money and buy 3g s

Ouch. Buy a new 3GS in the meantime to keep yourself happy...if your old one dries out and works, return the new one I suppose.

I don't get laughing at people who had something bad happen to someone else. It's just wrong I think.

Thats where I stopped reading.
I am starting to hate these 3 letters. It's over used and there could be worse things that happen. One friend put "I have to work 8-3, FML" Why is that a "FML"? She should be happy she has a job, and it's not the end of the world.
