Let’s all take a deep breath MacOS BigSur isn’t coming to the M1 iPad Pro. So what’s the point in buying a new iPad ?

Im scratching my head I hate the 12.9” Form factor, plus it’s thicker and heavier than the current 12.9” It’s not getting MacOS. And 99% of people won’t notice any difference or benefit because it’s MiniLED The Color Gamut hasn’t expanded. It’s not 10-bit it’s still an outdated 8-bit IPS display. That can get brighter Or darker.

There’s no cutting edge Camera system, It’s missing WiFI 6e and the 6Ghz WiFi Band.

The more I dived deeper into the M1 iPad Pro the more doubts I have. Maybe an M2 14” MacBook Pro MiniLED Is the move.

It’s the same reasons to buy an iPad as before then. Now with better specs.

Well we will know Apple intentions at WWDC, not before. I seriously doubt that MacOS will ever be on iPad, but I think that they can announce a pretty big software leap on iPadOS… we will know in a month.

in any case, people can be interested with the new hardware, especially the mini LED display. But I agree with you that an M1 chip doesn’t make a big difference with the A series if the software doesn’t take a big jump

The new ones both have new stuff which will be fun to try out. If you don’t want a 12.9” then get the 11” instead, shouldn’t get a specific size just for the Mini-LED.

Well said!

Until WWDC we can only guess what Apple is or isn’t going to deliver for the new iPad Pro.

I held off on upgrading my 2018 IPP because I realized that better hardware isn't what the iPad needs. Apple needs to differentiate the Pro from the base model and Air in terms of SOFTWARE capabilities. I am very curious to see what iPadOS 15 will bring and if there are any other surprises in stock (Xcode, Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro for iPad). Yes, I agree Apple will not bring Big Sur bootcamp to IPP but maybe a VM product like Parallels can make it's way to the App Store.

Unfortunately, there are no rumours as regards a big leap in iPadOS 15. None. Just some redesign home screen and misc stuffs. Nothing that can make it a true laptop replacement.

Don't hold your breath.

The iPad Pro didn’t need the extra power of the M1 and huge RAM increases if Apple didn’t believe iPadOS will be able to take advantage of that as well as some professional desktop level apps. The 2018/2020 iPad Pros were already faster running their apps than equivalent Intel based Macs and PCs so the hardware has been there, but I believe WWDC 2021 will have some big announcements for iPadOS in regards to professional apps.

sounds like OP wants an iPad Air

would it have made you feel better if they put an M1 in it, but renamed it A69XZ or something?

For the same reason that we've all been saying...

Final Cut Pro X for iPadOS and Logic Pro X for iPadOS will be unveiled at WWDC this year.

This is my first iPad (or apple product). Got the 12.9 1TB.

I have no idea if there is a point other than I wanted one for drawing/painting/sculpting. Love the screen. The most expensive drawing tablet I'll own up to now. More than the Wacom Cintiq 16" system I had a few years ago.
The rest of it is great for what it is. Higher specs are always better than lower. I hate bottlenecks on any hardware.

I have no idea if it makes sense to anyone else but me, but I'm okay with that. :)

I also have no idea what Big Sur offers, nor any iPadOS/iOS does or doesn't do... I have no frame of reference for apple products. I'm sure it'll be just fine for me. And knowing it has high end specs, I don't have to worry about whatever software comes down the pipe for it either.

Cheers!

That's the joy of consumer choice - while you may not see any benefits, many others including myself do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As for larger and heavier - I think you're overstating the issue

the 2020 iPad pro weighs in at 641 grams and a depth of 5.9 mm
The 2021 iPad pro weighs in at 682 grams and a depth of 6.4mm

So you're complaining about .5 millimeters difference and I'm not sure its really a fat boi being only 41 grams (or 1.4 ounces) heavier

As for not having macOs - yeah I get that complaint and in many respects I don't disagree. I think it would be great to see a full fledged OS on the iPad, BUT with that said, what would you do specifically that would require macOS?

I've seen people mention pivot tables with Excel, and a few other apps may be better on a mac then an iPAd. With that said, for many people (including myself) The iPad is a complementary device, not a primary device. I'll still be using my laptop for the heavy lifting and use the iPad for content consumption and some light work

I'm still reasonably optimistic about macOS coming to the iPad. It has a trackpad, it has a keyboard. Why not?

It certainly did NOT need the M1, so the fact they put it in there is a good sign.

But the M1 plus 16GB of RAM might be nice... prevent those Safari tab reloads that annoy (I’d hope).

The 16 gigs of ram is gonna be a game changer in Procreate and Nomad sculpt.

Also everyone needs to stop getting so hung up on it being an M1 vs and A series chip and what that is supposed to mean for this device.

It's just different window dressing for essentially the same chips. Whatever A series chip (I guess it would have been the A14X or A15) this iPad would have gotten would have been functionally at parity with the M1 chips.

MacOS we prob won't see it, but IMO we could see the mac app store on the ipad pro if something out of left field happens. I'm in on the new ipad because I want to read and take notes fast on big pdfs and on a size that resembles reg size paper.

Everyone's missing a fundamental point here - unlike the Macs, the iPad ALWAYS had ARM CPUs. So of COURSE it's not a huge difference like it was for the laptops. Even the previous iPad Pro was more powerful than most of the intel laptops - yet people bought them and used them without wondering why they were so powerful. It's just a 50% speed boost - and that's probably quite optimistic. So do what you already did, and it's a bit peppier.

If anything, the logical argument would be people saying "Why would a Mac need the POWER of an iPad CPU? There's no software on the Mac that can use it! It's just a waste."
