But just because they are abandoned doesn’t make them useless if they still work. I use Agenda+ (long since abandoned) and I still haven’t found anything else that comes close. It just works and displays everything I want as I like it. I haven’t updated to ios18 because of this removal.

Apple can’t keep pulling along old technologies simply because some developers aren’t willing to adapt. That’s been Microsoft’s problem with Windows for many years and a big reason why Windows is so reviled by many. They have to support all sorts of legacy drivers and PC models, etc. It’s unsustainable, ultimately.

I'm kinda glad they got rid of the classic widgets. I saw that as a transition stage for developers to move their app widgets to the contemporary version.

I have a rather frustrating story with Proton VPN to share. A long while back, I communicated with Proton that their widget for Proton VPN was still using the classic version and I asked them whether there were plans to update. Their response was very strange. They indicated they didn't understand what I was talking about because their widget was appearing where it should be. My reply to them was effectively trying to explain to them that their widget is at the bottom of the screen partitioned away from other widgets that use the contemporary versions, and the reason for that is because they're using the classic widgets and not contemporary one. They still didn't understand and I gave up. Why would it be up to me (a random user who actually has no developer skills) to try to explain to them what they actually should understand.

With the latest iOS 18 upgrade, classic widgets are gone and so is the Proton VPN widget. Maybe this will get their users riled up and finally Proton might update their VPN app to either include updated widget or alternatively, create a control icon that can be used in the Control screen of iOS/iPadOS.

Anyhow, again, I thought it was so stupid that Proton VPN developer (or at least their customer rep team) did not understand they were using classic widgets instead of the updated ones.

The current widgets have been available to developers since iOS 14, so it's only going to be old abandoned apps that will lose their widgets. Such as Logitech Harmony (which I miss!).
I think the problem with the widgets is the way Apple rolled them out with less functionality than the old ones so developers couldn't make equivalent widgets until just a year ago even if they wanted to.

iOS 14 added them to home screen. iOS 16 added lock screen widgets and finally iOS 17 made widgets interactive. Meanwhile they continued to support the old widgets the whole time. So we've ended up with many pre 17 widgets that aren't as good as they could be or some that haven't been updated at all.

I agree. The new ones were much less useful than the old-style ones until they became interactive. As you say, it took Apple until iOS 17 to work that out.

And developments in SwiftUI. I, for one, am glad that Apple dogfoods this type of thing on their own apps/widgets before releasing to the world. The result is that we now have high quality interactive widgets available for any developer who cares enough to deploy them. So rather than attacking Apple, petition developers to spend the time and resources to upgrade their own widgets.

I lost the widget for my smart bulbs.

There's a new widget version that works fine, but requires FaceID, is there a setting to disabled that requirement?

The last classic widget that I no longer use on iOS 18 because the "modern" look is worse than the pre-iOS 18 look...

Since iOS 10, I used to have Weather [Apple], Music [Apple], News [Apple], Widget Calendar

Text alignment of Music widget got destroyed in iOS 12 [when you have not played any music] so I stopped using it...

Apple News widget got removed sometime 2023/2024 and only available to countries that have access to Apple News...

So now on iOS 18, I only have the Weather widget on the dedicated widget page but on iOS 17, I have Apple Weather and Widget Calendar...

I've no idea what the verb "to dogfood" means. Anyhoo ... iOS 14, 15 and 16 had new style widgets with less functionality than the old style ones. So any developer who updated their app to use the new style widgets lost functionality for a few years, until they had to redo them again for iOS 17.

I assume these are very easy to code, but some large companies with apps are just not that bothered about how many iOS features their app uses. British Airways just gave up after iOS 13 and their app no longer has widgets. Lazy lot.

“Dogfooding” means testing something out on your own devices or software. The full context is that you are “eating (I.e., testing) your own dogfood” before releasing it to the world.

I’ve just come across this thread as I am on ios17 and wanted to know if classic widgets were still supported on ios18 and I use Agenda+. Did you find an alternative as I have never found anything as good? Thanks.
I am back on 17 and this Agenda+ widget is not in my purchased history. Have Apple pulled this for ios17 as well as it still worked perfectly.
How can I find it if it is still there as it was before I upgraded to the mess that 18 is.

I used Agenda+ for years. It‘s been out of the App Store for at least two years - maybe three or more.

I have not found a comparable replacement. I have been making do with the built-in calendar app, which has been getting better over the years.

I was using it just the other week but it’s now gone from my purchased history.
I hate when Apple does things like this So have to resort to the day hub widget.

When you set up a device you can only install apps that are currently available. You likely had it already installed so you were still able to use it.

Interestingly, Agenda+ got copied from my 12 Pro to my 16 Pro Max when I did setup of the new phone via Quick Start. Unfortunately, without the widget, Agenda+ is basically useless.

“Testing” is faster type and say. 😂

Yeaaah, I saw that coming… 😐

I have the very first "Philips Hue" set which App for the bridge is obsolete, and it provides only the good-ol classical widget.

So I decided to ignore iOS 18 for now, cause it's new features are ludicrous and there is still no Apple Intelligence on board.

I’ve notice with iOS 18 that the classic widgets are no longer working. I found this to be very useful especially the Google Maps Public Transport Times widget. Now I have to actually unlock my phone and load the Maps app to check my bus times. 😢😢

Edit (Pic of missing widgets)

There’s TWO reasons I might move back to Android.

1) Homescreen & Lockscreen Widgets

2) Lots of st**id/silly things Apple does like limiting volume control over Airplay with Spotify, but not my radio apps where I can use side buttons to control volume over Airplay. That Spotify CANT DOWNLOAD in the background but I have to either keep the app open with screen on or play a song and keep the volume off. That saves battery, right? The way it wants to keep control over your photos (good for my parents) but makes it really really difficulty if you want to move them off iCloud. Touting Apple Intelligence like the best thing since sliced bread, when in fact it hardly does anything (yet) and is just Siri’s illegitimate brother. Limiting charge speeds, in 2024? What about low refresh rate in the standard, in 2024? And USB 2.0 as well. In 2024?? And many many other things I haven’t figured out yet, which should be its own point all together…

3) So many advanced wonderful brilliant features that 99% of users have never even heard about but which they spend tons of programming resources on instead of known and present bugs we all get annoyed about.

Too much?
