The keynote isn't actually the only place within macworld they announce things .... snow leopard will get more details later in the week but its unlikely to unveil new hardware this week but it might be quite soon ... they have to

If this new intel quadcore has only just shipped it might be a few weeks before volumes ramp up to supply someone like apple with enough to do a whole new line ... so they might be commencing manufacture to get the channel filled and do an annoucement later and do it "shipping today" style

I'm in the same situation also.

But isn't there a chance that it may be still announced this week?

I'm going to hold out a little bit longer. I'd be gutted if I bought one now in frustration then a new one comes out in the next few months.

Very unlikely, looks like Apple have really shunned MacWorld, even without the iMac/Mac Mini stuff this Keynote is probably going to go down as one of, if not the, worst in history, and the last ironically.

There could be a lot of factors, some argue it's because Steve Jobs loves the limelight too much, others that they're purposely backing up their "Expo's aren't important anymore" line, I'd go along with the latter tbh, feels very like business positioning.

tbh though, I'm not sure why everyone is suggesting the iMac will be updated soon, if this whole fiasco has brought anything to mind, it's that they're gonna hold out until they can get Nehalem (sp?) solidly in, which is a longgg way away. To the people who are gonna say "BUT IT SCREWS UP THEIR WHOLE UPDATE CYCLE", go look at the MR Buyer's Guide, specifically iMac, Mac Pro and Mac Mini, they've been well off their update cycle for a while.

I was waiting for an update, have been for about 7 months, not because I want the latest and greatest but just because I'm a gamer and really -needed- that better graphics card.

I honestly believe they're gonna hold off a good 6-8 months and stick Nehalem in there, in which case, time to start shopping for a decent PC instead.

I've decided to wait, hopefully there will be something before April though, I don't think I can wait longer than that.

If they dropped the price by like 500$ I would consider one, but hey, 1800$ for 2 cores and an ATI HD 2600 PRO no way, such a rip-off, this graphics card must cost like 10$ to buy less than it costs to be manufactured.

That's the bad thing with Apple they do not reduce their prices as times goes by...

Nehalem would only be configure option. I think they are doing it like this way:

Releases new iMac and mini in few weeks with quad-core because apple has ordered one of the new quad-cores and I don't see where else to put it than a iMac. Nehalem iMac comes later, propably next year.

It will be a silent update because it's only a speed bumb and mini will get new outlook.

iMacs moving to quad core won't be a silent update. Apple will have an event. They will also move to LED displays and so will want to talk about that.

If it was that close, Steve is that ill, they would've given Phil's usual lackluster public performance by giving him nice updates.

Don't fool yourself, there's -no- reason to pass up the announcement today then silent-announce 2 new updates (both big deals, quad core and an update in the waiting for 2 years) less than a month later.

So do you think it would be a good idea to just buy an iMac now. I'll just find a 24" off of ebay for cheap if everyone really thinks it'll be a few months.

However, I don't want the same thing to happen to me again. The macbook line was updated to the penryn cores right after I bought mine. I don't want to shell out the cash for an imac and see the same s*** happen again.

Unfortunately nobody knows, I know that's not the answer you want, but Apple are world famous for being erratic.

From the "facts" (again, Apple being fickle can absolutely contradict these) most would analyse that they are holding out for a bigger update on the iMac, not just a speed bump.

Look at it this way, the MacWorld Keynote was pretty abysmal by all rights, even people who didn't care about the iMac/Mac Mini would admit that, there's literally no reason why they would avoid announcing an iMac update then announce it silently so soon afterward, there's honestly no benefit to anyone to do that.

Thus, it really feels to me like iMac's won't get an update until there's a pretty big redesign, probably both in Nehalem and aesthetics.

Really depends on how desperate you are for your iMac, unfortunately nobody can claim to be an expert on these things, but my opinion is we're looking at a good 6 months at least.

*sigh* I'm not too worried. School starts back for me on monday of next week. I'll just hold out throughout the semester and see what's in store.

Does anyone know when the next Apple event will be?

I'd be suprised if Apple didn't hold an event to announce new iMacs and "iLife 2009 shipping today" come the end of the month.

Well if today proved anything it's that Apple don't really care about events, and if you're looking for an updated iMac, if it does come, it'll almost definitely be a Tuesday silent update.

So, next events to look out for for you are every Tuesday on the Apple Store from now on :p

yeah, I agree it's worthy of a big announcement, but could that come later this week?

as I've said, I do "need" something in the next month or sooner. So I can wait the week out, but basically, I need it in hands in mid Feb...

Incredibly unlikely, for the previous reasons.

There's a seriously tiny chance something may happen during this week, so definitely wait it out, after that point, you're in the same boat as everyone. Best guess on my end is wait till MacWorld is over, MAYBE wait until next Tuesday just incase, then after that go ahead and order.

Is waiting until next Tuesday worth it?

No, they are not coming so soon, maybe late January.

I think everyone has seen these

If you don't need right now, wait.

And there will be NO redesigning because Apple has now made all the products look like iMac and if they now change it totally they would have to do it for all products. Mini will get redesigned.

It's simple as this:

A new iMac WILL come out sooner rather than later and it msot likely will be much better than the current ones. If you CAN wait, meaning you have a computer that works fine and are in no rush, then wait! You have nothing to lose and all to gain. If you can't wait then just buy one, even though a better one will be out soon you'll still have a great machine that will last for a long long time.

The end.
