Was in the Apple Store today and the amount of people buying iMacs was actually quite immense. Felt like going up to these people and saying like "WAIT ANOTHER WEEK". But on the other hand, I thought I would look like a complete tool. Thing is, you can't really say it cause the shopping assistant is there and he would probably end up pressing the security button in his pocket lol.

Whilst I know that only the hardcore 'nerds' on forums like MacRumors are aware of the new updates/refresh coming soon... it just goes to show the lack of research people actually do.

Don't know about yourself, but if I personally was going to spend hundreds of pounds on an item (irrespective of what brand) - I am the sort of person who does thorough ground work before proceeding to the purchase. Meh...
 
Not really. Those who go out and buy a product no matter how much it is, need the product now and don't care what happens tomorrow or what kind of hardware upgrades will be introduced because it won't matter to them or it won't benefit them. The iMac today will do the same thing as the iMac of tomorrow for them. If you were knew more of technology and know exactly what you're looking for and are very specific, you would probably do a bit a research.

Agree with your point. Good one actually. That said, I think only a majority/minority would fall into such a category. Yes, those who are buying the iMac aren't probably aware of the updates - and if they knew that they would get a better system for the same price tag... I would put my money on that they would hold on (depending on the time frame, quite reasonable to say its going to happen in the next week or two). Yes, and you correctly pointed out - if they need the system, they could probably care less.

I guess its fair to say that not everyone needs it at this point in time, whilst I know I am generalising here but there could be many possibilities.

i disagree on this one. unless you're quite wealthy, anytine you invest hundreds-thousands in anything it ideally should be done with some research beforehand, possibly extensive. however, im a dude & i dont really 'shop'. walking into stores you tend to make spur-of-the-moment purchases, no matter the cost, but if u do non-essential shopping on the internet you can research everything extensively in seconds.

I'm the same, and when I buy something I usually do so much research that I know almost everything about it, and I'll become completely obsessed during that time... But I'm weird :D

But, yeah, I think a lot of people would do research on something before going out and buying it, but clearly not everyone does.
 
I was talking to a friend of mine less than a week after the 13" MBP was introduced. We got to talking about how we had just both bought 13" MB's. Mine was the newly released 13" MBP (as I had been waiting months for an update) and hers was the 13" uMB, purchased from an Apple Store the day the MBP's were released.

As soon as I found this out, I told her about all the new features they added (new battery, firewire, better screen, backlit keyboard) and told her that she could probably go back to the Apple Store and have it exchanged or something. She really didn't care. It was too much hassle for her, and, although the new features would be nice, it was too much trouble to go through that process.

If I was in her position, I would do everything I could to get the new MBP instead of the uMB. Some people just don't care. I find girls care much less about technology than guys. Try explaining to a girl why hockey looks so much better in HD. They're too busy painting their nails to tell the difference.
 
Isn't it interesting that we all know that a new model year car will be coming each year, costing thousands of dollars more than our computers, and having more features and performance . . . but does that mean we never buy a new car?

More likely, "MOST" consumers will wait for the lowered prices around July or August, before the "new" models hit he dealers. :D
 
This is in a British (Scotland?) Apple Store. The average British person couldn't care less, heck the average person in Britain tends to be about 60, and just wants a nice computer, they couldnt give two ***** about what they buy.

As people have said, it's only the people like us on MR, AppleInsider, Engadget etc. that actually have any knowledge of future releases. The average BRITISH person couldn't care less.
 
I usually read up and make sure i know as much as possible before i buy anything expensive as i HATE finding out i could have gotten something else better and often times cheaper. But when i bought my iMac 2 years ago all i knew is that i wanted to leave Vista and that i didn't want a laptop. So a mac it was. As i saw there was only 1 product range that suited me (iMac) and that there were only 3 different versions of it i just took the plunge, as there wasnt a huge choice so i knew i couldn't go far wrong :)

Sure. But it's not about being wealthy or not. There are things which require or one should research but this is a computer and to many it's just that, a computer to do whatever. And to be perfectly honest and this might sound a bit ignorant, but most people really don't care. For most customers it's one, Apple and two, does do what I need it to do. The MacBook is the best seller. You think people really care it was underpowered relative to other offerings? Most consider it a tool and don't expect much other than can it handle word, internet and mail.

Horses for courses. Those same people that buy the day before an update, are the same people who will never install a program that doesn't come with the machine or do anything more taxing than sending an email while listening to iTunes.

I sure hope they update the macbook pro line within the next few weeks. I want to get a new one mid-november, but I don't want to get something that will be turned around and updated over the following few months. I don't need it right away, thats why I'm waiting, i just hope its updated!
 
i'm just waiting until the new minis are released so i can get one of the current ones on the refurb store for a good price.

I'm actually also considering that for the next macbook i get. Like get the last generation on clearance or refurb for even cheaper. So many options!
