Didn't pre-order since I wanted to see them in person. Walked into the local Apple store at 1:00pm EST. Walked out at 1:30pm with a 256gb Gold Max. No lines and several models and sizes in stock.

Anyone else with a similar experience? Seems like demand is either low or they finally got inventory correct.

I have 2 apple stores within 25 minutes. Still, don't want to waste my time as that has never been my experience on launch day.

I had an appointment to pick mine up, but the Apple store was practically empty this morning. I'm sure they must have had lots of phones available.

Local best buy also had walk in inventory. I was going to go there after the Apple store once I got to play with the new models first. I assumed Apple would be sold out.

Went to Apple Store at the King of Prussia mall. Took over 45 minutes to get in and maybe another 10-15 only to find out that they couldn't see me as an authorized user on my girlfriend's AT&T account despite the website clearly showing that I was.

Went upstairs to the AT&T store, no wait and was out in around 20 minutes.

It could be also because it's the off year for them. You know just the "S" year or whatever they call it. Time will tell when they release next year model.

well I have not gone to check my local Apple Store, since I am waiting to get mine from fedex, but it seems according to apple.com in my area the Xs max says currently unavailable for pickup. So it seems it sold out In my area.

They typically disable the in-store pick up on launch day. It will be re-enabled tomorrow and find that they will have plenty.

I didn’t even consider going to a store this year (even though last year I walked in and purchased in launch day).

Between being 1000% satisfied with my X and online ease of purchase I’m just going to wait for UPS to deliver.

Really if you have a credit card or debit card no reason exists to even go to the store these days.

Tomorrow morning, they will have a flood of units (XS Max included), and should be available to reserve. Just check 6am.

This is where I get annoyed a lot. I literally pre-ordered in the first 2 mins. Apple can drop the ball a lot with getting their stock to customers day 1. It seems like its always easier to just wait in line. Sucks.

Demand is low, because the phone is so unethically expensive.

20 minute wait, got a Max. Maybe 10 people in front of me at 10:30am. Not sure if they opened early but SCORED.

4S and 6S were busy as hell in my area if I remember right. Definitely the 4S.
Isn't this typical for "S" year models?
The 4S was released 14 months after the 4 when they changed release dates from June to September. So the wait for that phone was excruciating for a lot of people. It was definitely a very in demand S cycle. The 6S was lightning fast when compared to the 6, so a lot of people were geeked for that too. The XS is not that big of a jump in features or speed when comparing to the X which holds its ground well.

My nearest Apple store is two states over and a 2 hour drive. Never worth the risk.

Looks like it's time for you to move. Seriously though if my closest apple store was that far away I'd likely never go there.

These are fair points. I was just pointing out a couple of exceptions. One thing to add to the 4S is also that Steve Jobs died earlier that year, and I'm sure there was some measure of sentimentality or something to that effect that may have lead to increased interest. Certainly news organizations cared to some extent, as I was one of the people interviewed by Fox in my area when I waited overnight on that one.

Does the increased availability online and lower demand due to cost also significantly reduce the amount of resellers in line on day 1? I always wondered how many people were just buying phones to flip versus to keep in the old days....

I’ve been checking the local Apple store though the apple store app, and it shows currently unavailable for pickup.

Are there really more iPhone XS available if I go physically to the store? I don’t feel like driving 30 minutes.

This is a weird area. Two hours to New Orleans. It's a great day (or night) trip. I've even ridden over just to go to the Apple store. But I wouldn't want to do it regularly.
