Shame and strong pass once you have experienced it on an iPad !

Promotion on my 2020 iPad 11 inch, but I’m OK with the new mini coming out without it. I bought it knowing that it did not have promotion and it doesn’t bother me one bit.

It falls under the Air range in terms of features, so it was very predictable it wasn’t going to have ProMotion yet, as it’s a feature currently reserved as a differentiator for the Pro tier devices. Personally I think it’s one of the more minor display features.

Even my iPad Pro from 2017 has a better display with both ProMotion and 600 nits of brightness and because I am a one device person, this would definitely be a downgrade for me. Shame because I really like everything else about the new mini!

Yes, no promotion sucks but was to be expected. I really want the new Mini but I have gotten very used to promotion on my iPad Pro…

No ProMotion also means greater lag with the pencil…another bummer!
This has me a bit worried. I’ve been using the pencil 2 on an iPad Pro with Promotion for several years. I wonder if the mini is going to feel very laggy.

I have used the Pencil on the Air 4 and M1 Pro 12.9 and have found no difference between them for note-taking. I found no lag on the Air 4.

The 120Hz/60Hz difference tends to be more apparent when speedily scrolling or when playing games that support 120Hz (ie Call of Duty: Mobile).

60Hz scrolling isn’t that bad either, it’s just 120Hz looks much nicer.

It's always something :D what else, nits?

But it could be much worse. They sort of went about 3/4 of the way to pro. Not bad. Actually, to make the screen pro would have raised the price even more. People would have freaked out.

Unfortunately they have relegated ProMotion to be a Pro-specific feature still, all these years after its initial introduction. I wish it would waterfall down to all of their products but there's no indication of that happening anytime soon. It's disappointing, but it was definitely expected.

It’s just that the scrolling experience on my 2017 iPad Pro has been so buttery smooth, this “downgrade” is an unfortunate dealbreaker for me, especially that everything else checks.
I understand that some don’t notice or care much about it but for those that do like me, it’s a real shame.

Yep, you at the minimum get 100 nits less than the pro versions.

That was a HUGE issue for me - using the Apple Pencil with the Air 4 vs the Pro 11. You can try to ignore it, but you REALLY notice it (especially after years of using a Pro 11). lol. I had to give the Air 4 to family and go back to it - the scrolling is noticeable but far easier to get used to lack of promotion there vs the pencil.

I love the size of the mini but the Pro 11, while being a bit too big, is just too perfect - that screen, that smoothness, etc. The ability to write hours of notes in landscape mode with the Apple Pencil.... yeah, I've decided to keep the Pro 11 despite wanting the mini 6 really bad. Seems like it would be a PERFECT reader.

Exactly, the dimensions make it a perfect reading device but I just can’t accept an inferior screen to my 2017 10.5” Pro.

It always boggles my mind when people tell me they don't notice the difference or don't care about the feature. Everything is SO smooth with ProMotion, and going back to 60 Hz tablets (or manually limiting the refresh rate of an iPad Pro's screen) is quite a jarring difference to me. I will make the exception for this new mini because it's so incredible in every other regard, though.
