As others have said, market saturation. Coupled with the fact that most folks looking on craigslist are looking for a bargain and are generally looking for a base model. As in options on a car, there is virtually no resale value on upgrades, such as extra storage. Even cellular capability seems to offer only a minor increase in price.

The 32 GB version is currently on the refurb store for $509. I doubt anyone will offer you much more than that, even though double the storage, because you are an unknown entity versus buying from a legitimate source.

Market Saturation. I was looking to sell my RMini and get an Air but after looking at eBay & Craigslist, it seems I will be keeping it. :(

I had to sell my original 32GB AT&T Mini for $325 PLUS an unlocked 16GB 4S for $300 in order to buy my retina Mini. I had to add some cash to it of course but that was my plan all along. This was in December.

I sold my 16gb 4G 3rd gen back in October for over $450 I don't think I could get that for the same air model now.

You have to beat the best refurb price from Apple by at least 20% before I'll even look. Right now the 64GB air is $589 on the apple store. No way are you gonna get 600 for yours.

Even if it is new in box, you are charging more than Apple.

Getting $500 would be a really good deal since I wouldn't flirt with anything above $475 (~20% off the refurb price) from a buyers perspective.

I sold my 64gb Air for $500 and that included a smart cover. Had bad eBay experiences with higher priced items, so didn't want to deal with that. Sold it to someone I work with. Paid for half of it originally with BestBuy GC's. Wound up getting a 64gb rMini shortly after selling the Air. That's what I originally wanted, but opted for the Air.

That it in a nutshell. Apple refurb is brand-new for all practical purposes and if they're selling a $699 product for $589 then you're never going to get $600 on a liquid market like eBay. Your only shot is with a friend who is considering buying one new (oh you want an iPad air? I'll sell you this one for $600, it's brand new).

Then who even buys new ones. This makes no sense at all

Apparently a lot of people buy new ones.

Refurbs aren't available at launch, obviously. So those who want the product right away do not have a choice.

Also, Apple refurbs are not available from resellers like Best Buy, so people who shop at other stores do not have the choice of an official Apple refurb.

No one in their right mind! haha.

It really pays to buy used if you can, especially if you can find one with AppleCare+ and maybe a case / screen protector. Sometimes those accessories can add $50-100 in savings.

I picked up an Air 128gb with Cellular for $650 in like new condition, so buying used if you can wait it out can save you quite a bit.

iPads used to hold their value insanely well after bought new. Now they seem similar to cars... the value drops quite a bit after they are bought.

It makes perfect sense. You were hoping to get more for it than it's actually worth, simple as that.

Any item is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. People are willing to pay more for new or refurbished iPads from Apple because they can be confident that the product is actually new, has a warranty and will come from a store (or a branded & official website)--not from a stranger they don't know if they should trust.

People are getting scared of buying used iOS products. There are so many people out there selling stolen products, activation locked products or other sorts of scams that unless you're offering a great deal--nobody will buy your iPad.

The fact that it's "new in box" may also be hurting you. There are scammers out there that remove the contents of the box, put rocks or weights in it, re-shrink wrap it and then sell it as new. They won't let the buyer open it until they pay.

The average craigslist or ebay buyer doesn't give a damn if it's new in box or beat to hell--as long as it's cheap. You're barking up the wrong tree asking for $600.

It seems there is absolutely no resale value at all. I have been gifted a black iPad air. It was 64GB, and Iv been trying to get it sold for over a month for a good price. Im looking for around 600. Its still factory sealed with apple care. I don't understand why they have no resale value. Anyone know? On ebay they seem to sell for 500

You're likely having trouble selling it because retailers have had the iPads constantly on sale. You're asking for $600 which is a fair price, however there's been sales at Target for instance for $50 off or a $50 giftcard making it $649, if you have a red card that's another 5% off which puts it around $617ish. Most people are gonna pay the $17 for a new one with a full years warranty.

Furthermore retailers have been proactive in getting rid of used stock, I bought a 64GB LTE Air from cowboom (Best Buys deal website) for $519+tax after their $20 spring coupon. I still think I'd have a little bit of trouble getting $600 for the LTE model simply because the average consumer is looking at the $$ not the actual functionality/space

There are actually quite a few that I see there selling for around $575 on eBay. One did ultimately make it to $600.

I'd look at it this way: you got the iPad Air for free. Even $500 from nothing isn't bad, and definitely not "absolutely no resale value."

You could also try listing it on Amazon as new, and selling there. You might get slightly more that way.

If the 64GB don't do that good, wonder how the 128GB ones do when selling.

probably not good, as the market for 128GB iPads is pretty small and not so price sensitive, so, you'd be having folks who'd much rather buy it new than second hand.

I found the lack of resale of my old iPhone 4 when the 5 came out. Since then I don't expect anything when upgrading. I won't and don't buy my iDevices with resale on my mind. I'll get them to fit a need

Everything sells for the right price

I always underbid other sellers (on Amazon) and have a great feedback record, so buyers trust me. I also want to pass good things on, so I look at it as partially recoup of costs and partially good recycling deed. Christmas in May for somebody, so to speak. Lots of people would like a good deal.

Yep. Totally no resale at all. $500? Pennies. Not even worth the time for someone as entitled and greedy as you.

You got a gift that you don't want, so you're trying to make a buck after someone else spent money they worked for on you. And on top of it, you have the audacity to sit and complain about how $500 is "absolutely no resale value." That kind of behavior and entitlement is sickening and pathetic. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I agree. I would love to have an iPad Air 64GB. Right now I'm stuck with a 16GB.

I'll take your iPad. Ever since I became a father I rarely get to spend any money on myself. I would love an iPad. I still have never even used one. :(

Is that something you do occasionally when you have an item or is your business model built on undercutting other sellers and marking down below price? :D

jk

I agree that resale has been down for awhile. It's a great time to buy an iPad right now, but not so great if you want to sell one.

I was going to buy a used cellular iPad Air 128gb for $650 on Craigslist, but I wanted the Mini instead. It seems that the Mini currently has a higher resale value than the Air. I ended up buying a 128gb cellular iPad Mini on eBay.

I don't agree that the price for 128gb iPads is not so price sensitive. I noticed that there are quite a few cellular 128gb iPad Airs on Craigslist for around $600-$650. The current resale value for the Mini is actually higher than the Air. Given that the retail price of a cellular 128gb is close to $1k, I'm assuming most people would rather get it used for around $600.

I was tempted to get the Air as I noticed some on Craigslist for the same price. I prefer the form factor of the Mini, but noticed that the current resale value of the Mini is higher than that of the Air . I ended up getting a 128gb cellular iPad Mini off eBay for around $680.
