seriously? $550 a MONTH for rent? we pay $300 a WEEK here!

i saved up 3 years for my iMac.

300 a week? London is cheaper with its rooms for 95 GBP, or do you many 300 for the whole flat?

Anyway, those are quite some prices. When I studied and shared a flat with three others, I paid 180€ for one month. Now that I have my own flat, I pay 300€, albeit for only 40 m^2. A friend of mine pays 550€ for her 70 m^2 flat, but those are low prices in Berlin I guess.

Wow, you really have some cheap flats! I paid 800€ per month for 21m^2 flat!!! And that's CHEAP here!

no, i mean $300 aus will generally get you a 2 bedroom tiny apartment. somewhere about the 50m^2 area.

1200 A$ = 826 €, quite a lot for 50m^2 (how do that correctly anyway?), and you also have to pay a lot of tuition I guess?

Even Berlin has 50m^2 for less in its better parts, but London is more expensive than that. What is the condition of this apartment?

The one for 180€ (room, flat costed around 900€ for approx. 100m^2) was in a small town of 17000 people with 5000 students. That town also had residential homes, but they even cost more than normal flats, but as there weren't that many flats available, those homes were needed.

The flat I'm living in now is a single room flat (floor, kitchen, bathroom, big room) and the area it is situated in is a bit out of the Circle Line, but still close to several city centres Berlin has (20 min). It's quite cheap, I could also pay 500€ for the same size in a better street nearer the centre, but as I don't have a constant income, it works for now.

Get a girlfriend, tell her to move in, make her pay half of utilities, rent and stuff

Not true. What you'll have is a whole bunch of DIY jobs to do and money for scatter cushions. Teh Girlfriend will want to spend that surplus her way :)

$35 an hour is an awesome wage. I dont even make that with a bachelors and 8 years experience. My rent is $950 and my truck payment is $550. I managed to buy a few Apple products with my measly wage

Really? with that much experiences you still make less than $35? What do you do? I guess it's not anything related to Engineering or Computer Science.

I'm Software Engineer. I got a MS degree majoring Software Engineering I started my first year of work with $26 / hour I have 3 years experiences and now I'm making about $34.

Sell and buy. That's what I do. Look around the house for any gadget, old DVD's you don't watch, and other items you don't need. Sell them on E-bay and put the funds toward the iMac. Once your initial investment is made, the next iMac will only cost 1/3 as much since Apple stuff tends to have a high resale value.

and you also have to pay a lot of tuition I guess?

Nope. Australians get HECS-HELP for University tuition.. i.e. government pays your tuition fees and you pay the government back via tax if you earn over a certain amount a year.

Although you still have to pay for your own textbooks and whatnot... but who buys them ;)

I currently owe the government something like $27,000 :p

How? People are just swiping their credit cards. They cannot payback and file a bankruptcy. This is just another way of showing we will be in this mess for a longer.

Or alternatively we are swiping our debit cards and paying with the money we've been putting aside for a new computer. Don't project :p

Sorry about your maxed out credit cards dude! :(

We buy all the refurbs from the foolish people that rush out and buy the new models full price.

Latest/greatest is nice, but unless you're making money withy your machine, it's not necessary. Just buy last year's models on closeout/refurb/used. Buying i7 w/ SSD on a tight household budget sound silly.

When you're young, you have the power of youth, the looks, the energy - but not a lot of money.

The best thing about getting older is earning more. I'm 32, losing my hair and have a little gut, but I do earn £140k a year and enjoy spending it.

Work hard and you'll be in the same position before you know it.

I fear I may know you from another forum? Have you had terrible car luck recently?

Either way, yes, once you start getting on a little cash is easier to come by.

In answer to the original post, 0% credit card and I'll pay for it at some stage in the next 12 months when I can be arsed. It means the thing's insured and the £xxxx I would have spent can go into savings/paying off mortgage/beer and hookers.

I have savings that couldve paid for it, but instead I signed up for a credit card with Capital one that gave me 0% for 12 months.. I paid it off in a month and a half and didnt have to use any money from my savings account.. I just really wanted to get a nice new computer so I figured I could afford it

I am also a student, so im far from stable when it comes to money.
However i did recently buy a refurb 27" i7. Ive managed to get myself a job for three months over summer, working 37.5 hours a week for £6.50 an hour.
Thanks to some money i had left over from university combined with some of my first months wages, means i have already managed to pay half.
As for the other half, i was very fortunate in that a family member lent me the money, and has said that i can pay back whatever i can afford each month, meaning i should hopefully have it payed off in the next 2 or 3 months.
Like other people have said already though, it seems strange that with your current income you cant find a way to finance a new imac. Even if it means spreading the cost out over a few months or something.

Craig.
