Hi everyone... This is my first post in this forum... just registered to tell all of you that this trick worked for me... VERY WEIRD...

I have an onkyo receiver and macbook 2006 model for home media centre. I tried to connect the optical output using an mini-toslink to toslink cable, but I tried everything without making the receiver to detect any signal from my mac... As the last resort, I tried the trick with a plastic wire together with the mini-toslink plug... then everything works...

I believe there are many other people suffering from this problem (after searching around in google seeing the same complains), but few know this trick... Hope more people get to know this

Cheers

Yes this worked for me, it was simply a dirty optical out on my MacBook. I heated some shrink wrap around a wire and fiddled in the jack. It even pulled out a small piece of dirt/dust to confirm!

That is crazy! I spent ages last night trying to get my new Toslink cable to work on my Mac Mini. Just no sound and no light on the tip of the optical end. I found this trick and just tried it for the heck of it and hey presto it's working!!! WTH is that all about?!! Thanks for posting this fix though.
