Does Siri make an audible sound when you say "Hey Siri"?
Yes, after you say the whole command.
And that's to be expected. While Siri is elaborating an answer, there is a lag time, especially if your network is slow. Since presumably the Phone could be not in your hands and eventually away from your eyes (eg: when driving) you need a sound, to make sure that Siri has received your input and is waiting for the Apple server.

That's especially important when you consider that hey siri is still a bit unrelaible: sometimes you say "hey siri, wake me at 17:00" and..nothing happens!
But then, You don't hear any sound and you know you simply have to try again.
Example of a "hey siri" interaction (when it works correctly):
- Hey siri, wake me at 17:00
- bibip
- waiting time (depends on your network speed)
- answer

Also with the "beep" you can know if a siri interaction has been triggered by mistake

I just discovered that you can use the home button as a push to talk button. Just push it, speak to Siri, and let go. It's just like talking on a radio.

We used to push to get Siri's attention, then waited for the beep and talked. Now, just press and hold while you ask the question, then release. That makes it much easier.

True! That has been introduced with iOS8 and works on older iPhones as well :)

The M9 does explain this. The sound or vibration was necessary in earlier devices because there was a small delay between when the screen changed to the Siri prompt, and when you could actually start speaking. Siri on the 6s does not have this delay. The exact instant the screen changes, you can start talking. This makes the sound/vibration redundant.
You don't even have to wait for the screen to change. Start talking and then hold it. It will still pickup on what you said even before you pressed the button. So anyone who leaves hey Siri off to save battery won't be saving nothing. She's still listening.

Uhm....You made a smart point, that made me think...and yet, if I had to bet, I would bet this is not true, or not entirely. You know why? :)

When you activate iOS9 powersave mode Hey Siri doesn't work.

And if you go to the "Battery" section in the Settings app you can read that this is a normal and intended behaviour.

And yet, even in power save mode, Siri is always active...
the difference is...it's not always listening! :) while the Siri process is always active, the Mic is not. You have to press the button to turn the phone mic on! That's why you actually save a bit of battery disabling "hey siri" ;)

Btw: Think about how much care has been put in those tiny implementation details. Siri interaction model looks very simple at first glance, but its semplicity required a lot of thought to its devs.
They did a wonderful job with iOS9+iPhone 6s.

I wish other parts were so refined...you know, iCloud Drive app (ugh), file management, iWork... ;-) maybe iOS10

But is the mic only disabled when in power save mode? As i have hey Siri off and she still gets my full command despite me not pushing the button until I had already started speaking.

Uhm, not sure about that. It could be, or maybe, in your case, it could be turned on only when the screen is turned on? Try doing it while the phone in standby.

Ahah, sometimes I like to be cryptic, but just sometimes! :)
Seriously: the vibration/sound thing was a way for siri to say "i'm ready to listen". If you talked before the end of the sound, words were lost. With the iPhone 6s, Siri is ALWAYS ready. Just press the home button and start talking. It will be listening even a fraction before the siri screen appears to be active. Try it! :)
This is thanks to the m9 chip, which always keeps siri ready for the "ehi Siri" stuff.
Since Siri is always active, a sound or a vibration are not needed anymore

Thanks for posting this, it was driving me crazy. It does work as you say, no need to wait. How would one know this? Siri is a big deal for them, I've seen a lot of posts with people wondering what happen to the beep, then what happened to the vibrate. Your post was the only time I have read this...
