I hate to put it this way but there seem to be a number of really arrogant responses in this thread. Fact is, every time I try an iphone and have to swipe up to get to the home screen after already having unlocked the phone I think how stupid a system it is. It's not that it takes any real effort that is intruding on my life or anything, it's just that it's unnecessary. But then again so are about 85% of what they put into cell phones these days!

Since there is such a difference of opinion, I really think Apple should at least give the option to do it either way.

Ironically the best setup is on the iPad with an external keyboard. Quick double-tap the space bar on the physical keyboard for the 2018 iPad Pro and Face ID will unlock the iPad and take you directly to the Home Screen.

With my 2017 iPad Pro this doesn’t work because it has Touch ID. You have to reach forward and activate Touch ID to get to the home screen. However, instead of double tapping the space bar, I just reach directly for Touch ID. I do a single tap on the space bar though if I just want to check the time.

Hey guys, stop trying too hard.
You literally spend all the time you could’ve saved from “only looking at your screen to unlock your phone” to write and reply to this thread. I mean, over the grand scheme of things, does this really that matter?
Also, regarding this issue, for Touch ID, you would still hold your phone and rest your finger. For Face ID, you want to “not hold your phone” and just look at it to unlock? What about the odds that you accidentally unlock your phone because Face ID is so fast even just looking at it from an angle would trigger an unlock that goes to home screen? Wouldn’t that be a problem or a privacy concern? For me I would rather iPhone lights up the screen as I look at it so I can check the time or notifications without picking it up.

If I had my pick, I would have it show notifications unless there were none. If I had none it would open to the home screen. That way I see notices, read and clear notices, move on or swipe up to do more.

This. Hope Apple is aware of this and will implement it.

I just started using Face ID have no idea why this isn’t already implemented.

This has nothing in particular to do with Face ID. Every iPhone wakes to the Lock Screen. Always has. If there's no Touch ID or Face ID or Passcode lock, it says "Slide to Unlock." It doesn't have to do with Notifications - Notifications on the Lock Screen are optional.

The reason for the Lock Screen is to prevent accidental, unwanted actions; pocket dialing, opening apps, and the equivalent.

Requiring a swipe-up following Face ID is still iPhone's way of saying, "Are you sure you want to use me?"

Face ID unlocks at a glance, even when you aren't intending to use the phone. While there are plenty of times when automatically unlocking wouldn't be a big deal, what if you had an app open that you really didn't want your friends/co-workers/family members to see? Say your iPhone is propped up on your desk, your boss comes over, you glance down in the direction of your iPhone, and a selfie of your boy/girlfriend pops open.

Again, this comes down to the question, "Do you intend to use your iPhone, or is it an accident?"

what is the point of Face ID replacing fingerprints (which could surely have been done without a home button) if you have to swipe anyway?

and as a side issue, lots of defensiveness, 'hope this thread is a troll attempt'....

Yeah, this bugs me and it's one of several reasons why I'd choose Touch ID if I had a choice.

Because for a start it's over 20x more secure than TouchID. It also allowed them to have more screen real estate as they didn't have to include a fingerprint sensor. Yes under glass fingerprint sensors exist now but personally I would rather have security over convenience. Also under glass fingerprint readers seem a bit janky in terms of functionality(can't use it with wet fingers etc...). They can only improve with hardware improvements. FaceID on the other hand improves the more you use it meaning overtime it will improve it's accuracy without any hardware having to be touched.

You still need to upgrade the sensor arrays. If the image sensor capture cannot properly be used to identify you are you, then Face ID won’t work properly.

Sure! But what i'm saying is with FaceID, the accuracy CAN improve without the hardware being touched as it contains learning algorithms. I believe TouchID and underglass fingerprint readers can't do this?

For me, it's a matter of which sensors are upgraded, and which deliver the most benefits. An in-screen fingerprint scanner is a "mono-tasker" (as foodie celebrity Alton Brown likes to say). What can it do but sense fingerprints? The sensors used for facial recognition can be and are used for other functions. That starts with the selfie camera - everyone likes better selfies. The 3-D sensors are and can be used for a wide range of AR/VR-related functions, gesture-sensing, etc., which makes them multi-taskers. That means more bang for the buck.

I've been doing this on my XS Max with the latest Jailbreak and its amazing. I have it set up so it opens automatically as soon as I look at my phone or stops at the lockscreen as normal if there are new notifications. This is a life changing feature, I pick up my phone and by the time I have it up its already on my homescreen or the last app I had open.

this seems really daft to me, I use Face ID and I still have to use my finger to swipe
It wasn’t a user benefit but for cops who got tired of the paperwork. Now, the just hold the screen to the perps face and swipe up. Multiple felonies and list of customers. Put the fingerprint back, but on the screen, dummies.
