Nokia just announced a phone with a 41MP sensor!

It shoots an oversampled 41MP image, then takes the date from seven neighboring pixels. In the end the final image is only 5MP's.

Still, it's an amazing feat. When I first read your post I thought the phone boasted a Foveon X3 Sensor.

I admit I know next to nothing about this stuff. Thanks for enlightening me guys. It seems to be a strongly media-based phone. Very impressive effort from Nokia

The final image comes out to 8MP.

Still, this will blow the 4S camera out of the water!

Well perhaps that should still count as 41 MP, since near ALL digital cameras interpolate data between pixels to form the final image. If that wasn't true, then we'd only get black and white photos from digital cameras, since camera sensors technically can't tell one colour apart from another, and electrons don't carry colour information!


The exception are the Foveon sensors. Those are pretty awesome, in theory.

I am quite excited for that thing, read about it a minute ago.
Here's a sample I found browsing around
Good blacks, acceptable whites, but the quality, man!
The only things I can be mad about are this being on a phone with goddamn Symbian instead of Android or Winmobile or some GOOD OS, and this technology not being available on actual cameras. Point and shoot cameras would benefit so much from this.

buddy, you can either keep 41mp image and crop yourself or keep the cropped 8mp image of 41mp resoluted image(done automatically by compressing 7pixels into 1 super pixel)..you can do both.its amazing!!

Its not the number of megapixels but rather the sensor size. I'd rather see a bigger sensor and not worry about how many megapixels there are.

Did you see the sample posted? If that is indeed a true sample shot then it is impressive. Look at the guy wearing dark jeans and a blazer, you can see color separation between the blazer and jeans where on my iPhone 4S I bet it would blend a bit more.

I missed that, the linked article had images of the phone but not produced by the phone.

Edit: by the way, I saw some good samples being produced by the then top of the line Droid X, only to be sourly disappointed in the quality and performance of the camera.

The Nokia may very well produce some great images, but the fact remains a camera will benefit more from a larger sensor then jamming more megapixels into a tiny sensor

The iPhone effectively killed Symbian. Nokia has even admitted that Symbian is a dead-end.

So, naturally, Nokia thought it would be a great idea to make a fugly Symbian phone, but this time around attach a mammoth camera to it.

Yeah that'll work.

It might impress you, doesn't mean it is impressive. So what's the sensor size? That's the only thing that counts.

So where are the pictures that engadget took? They are not there. These pictures are Nokia marketing department pictures. Now if we believe everything the engadget article says, do we believe this as well? "Dimensions: 123.9 x 60.2 x 13.9 in" :)

The sensor size is 1/1.2inch, From all the sample shots and low light video samples, i'm tempted.

That is actually exactly like saying "so what's the iPad 3's screen size, that's the only thing that counts" when you're all drooling over the smaller pixels.

Elop claimed symbian would not be the main OS for Nokia anymore. Not quite admitting a dead-end. As for the rest, future will tell.

You really should try to read and understand the article first before going into your standard everything lacking the Apple label sucks rant.
It is pretty clear that this was something they are experimenting with and looks like they plan to move it into there windows phone line.

Why release it in this state? Do they even care what they put their name to? It's a fugly phone with a big camera shoved inside, built around a dead OS. Why is this crap even for sale - a clunky novelty phone with horribly implemented camera-tech.

But unsurprisingly, it's too much to ask for Nokia to wait until they actually have a design around this that doesn't look like ass. No wonder they're in the position they're in today. They've had the benefit of observing Apple since 2007 and they've learned sweet f all.

I would love to see Microsoft and Nokia become one.

The Lumia series are leading the way with Windows Phone and Nokia have been putting out some quality hardware of late.

It's a pity to see this tech wasted on Symbian. I'm sure that Nokia will engineer it into future Windows Phones.
