Nokia unveals Lumia 920...can we say DOA?

We all know this is a bad week for other phone makers to 'unveil' new products in the midst of a Apple event in which everyone is expecting a new iPhone but what do you think of Nokias new device?

I think it has a lot of merits. Wireless charging, NFC, a supposedly great camera, a touch screen you can use with any gloves, a super fast response time on the screen apparently, and some interesting software to boot.

Is it enough to unseat a rival? No, but nothing will be for a long time. iPhone and Android are heavily entreanched in consumer habits at this point. I think it will be a worthy contender nonetheless.

Curious but why do you think it's DOA?

Any thing without an Apple logo on it is DOA to a lot of people.

And Apple insider is a pathetic place to get any information now. The articles are heavily biased, poorly written and leave facts out if they negatively impact the pro-Apple propaganda. Hell, I've seen those jokers actually alter facts to make the article more pro-Apple. Only in the last year has that Site gone from linking reliable, unbiased reports to putting out the crap they do now.

I wasn't aware AI was like this, I don't read their site regularly its just so happened to be where I saw the story break first via MacHash.

And I think the new iPhone will gobble up most of the attention for a good few months, hence the DOA.

Doesn't look like a bad camera/phone though. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on one just to see. :)

First of all, yes, I am a fanboy, I love my iPhone and the iPods I have.

Second, I like competition, it means everyone has to stay on their toes and make the best they can make, including Apple. Bonus for you and I.

And finally, I should have titled the thread "SHOULD we say DOA?" due to events taking place within a weeks time. My apologies. This isn't meant as some fanboy I hate every other phone made kind of thread. Just looking for your thoughts on Nokias new phone.

Personally I think the new Lumia is absolutely fantastic - looks fantastic, seems to operate fantastic, and brings a lot of neat new (not copied) features.

But I think the phone IS kinda-sorta DOA, because (IMO):

1) They announced the phone in September, yet it won't be launched until later in Q4....by then, people are going to forget about this phone as the iPhone 5 comes out, Sony launches its new phones, Google brings forth its Nexus' line for 2012 (rumoured to be 5 models), and leaks of the Galaxy 4 start to come out. I give credit to Apple - when they hold a launch for a phone, it is available pretty close to ASAP

2) The Windows app market, for now, is pretty dead - I was browsing yesterday, and really the lack of QUALITY/signature apps is embarassing. MS really needs to do a lot more work here before people will seriously consider the Lumia.

These new devices are well featured and look great.

Far from DOA. It's all on MSFT and Nokia to make things happen at this point though.

Have you ever played with a Lumina 920? Have you ever even played with a Lumina 900? The specs on the 920 look quite good. Some people might say they are not on par with a lot of Android manufactures but because the hardware is more closely tied to the software (with the Nokia, Microsoft partnership) the performance should be at least on par, if not better. I think the only thing holding the Windows 8 platform back is a lack of apps compared to iOS/Android. However Microsoft seems to be working on that. I expect to see quite a few adopters of the Windows platform because of the 920

Good points. Announcing and then waiting months to release it won't help at all.

I think the key for the 920 and any other WP8 is how quickly apps can be updated. As I understand it, WP8 is not backwards compatible with earlier versions of WP. I believe that means apps written for WP7 will not work on WP8.

According to this article over at Ars Technica, WP7 apps will work with WP8. They'll be upscaled, and likely won't look as good as native apps, but they do work.

Speaking of apps, the lack of them in comparison to the iDevices is probably the only thing keeping me away from this phone. It's a swank looking (semi) little piece of tech, otherwise. If MS can up app support to decent levels over the next couple of years, I'll be sorely tempted to ditch my iPad and iPhone for the Surface and the Lumia.

One thing MSFT really needs to stop doing is announcing months before release.

You lose so much momentum by doing that.

DOA? No way, I think Windows 8 phones have a great thing going, and while I don't think they can beat Android or the iPhone in marketshare, they can still get their own niche going.

Hardware? Looks great? Software, looks great to.

Windows 8 Phone Software, I gotta say. I love the UI, the interface is awesome. Its butter smooth, and super easy to learn.

Why do all these companies ignore Apple's simple tactic of announcing and then releasing a week or two later? It's spectacularly stupid on their part, and Apple is supposed to be the newcomer in the cell phone business. Also, you'd think that Microsoft, seemingly following Apple's platform model, would urge Nokia to do the same.
