Well, if you spend $1000, then you probably wouldn't want people to confuse it with a $300 netbook.

I didn't buy it to show it off or increase my popularity. If someone wants to call it a netbook, its fine with me. It's a nice machine regardless of which class of laptop it's attributed to.

I did photo editing on my dell mini, it had more than the bare minimum to surf the net and light office and it was more powerful than my 2002 desktop (which lasted me until 2006). So it's not a netbook either?

Technology advances. A definition based on maximum actions possible is still a time-bound definition.

Ok, so let's take a safe approach and just use posthumous definitions about what stuff HAS BEEN (and not what it's supposed to be), it will make things a lot easier. We'll be able to change this definition in the future if things change.

So: in the first 3 years of their existence, on average (and looking at the biggest part of sales and most common scenarios), the product called "a netbook" has been defined, among other things (listed in a previous post), by an Atom or Atom-like CPU with a raw power far behind even 5 years old CPUs like the Yonah CPUs of the first intel Macbooks and 2006 Windows laptops. Said CPUs are also very cheap, cool and have a very low power consumption.

Another netbook "ante litteram":

But what do I know....Asus invented small screen laptops in 2008....my ego doesn't need to conceal that...

I find it funny that a few dismiss the new Airs as netbooks. Perhaps because they want to get a reaction or have a disdain for Apple. Netbooks are cheap, limited use notebooks meant for surfing the web and e-mails, watching DVD's with small, underpowered processors to achieve these tasks. You can make the argument that the iPad is "net book" like, but to categorize a fully functional core processor ultra thin and light portable computer that can run most programs efficiently is just false and disparaging just for dispariging's sake.

Yes it's highly priced with the usual Apple tax, but it's definitely not a net book.

it is just a tool people....just. a. tool.

its not like the mba gets better or worse by how one calls it

What's annoying are kids thinking ultraportables/thin&light where invented in 2008 by Asus and ought to be called "netbooks".

I don't get how it is annoying though. I just don't see how a name takes away from what a computer will do. Maybe that's just me

Well of course it's not really annoying :), I (like you) can just close the browser and lead my real life happily using what I like to use and calling it as I like.

It's annoying "forum-wise" and sometimes you just debate for the sake of debating. But in the end who really cares if people wanna call it a double rainbow or a netbook.

I think everyone is allowed to decide if their individual computer is a netbook or not despite what anyone else says

I guess in this day and age - netbook certainly reflects the function of a portable computer moreso than a notebook. We probably use more net than note-taking as a whole now.

But a Macbook is a macbook. :apple: :D

The new MBA has nothing to do with a netbook!

I've received my maxed out CTO 11.6 MBA a few days ago. While the size and weight matches a standard netbook, it has nothing else in common with those cheap netbooks. Name me a netbook that can play Crysis or Call of Duty MW 2 on medium settings! None of them. The new MBA is an ultraportable. If hooked with an external setup (monitor, keyboard, mouse) and used with external storage, it can serve the purpose of a primary computer really well.

Netbooks are defined by price and size. They need to be small and cheap. Often they use an Atom chip, but you can see AMD Neo chips in there and sometimes Intel Celerons. Those details aren't super important. Its just some combo of small and cheap, which the Air is not(cheap, it is small)

Give me a minute i'm uploading a video of it playing Doom 3 on Ultra Settings @ 1366x786 4x AA and getting 100FPS.. :)

There is not a Netbook sold that can do that... sorry intel integrated graphics suck.

m11x... but I guess that's not a netbook either.

Uhh No It's not a netbook

trust me, ive got the fully loaded 11 incher and friend has a moderate loaded 13 incher and basically NO different what so ever! In every way! I much prefer the small package, the truth is small is in. For example who wouldn't rather have a porsche cayenne as compared to a bigger american SUV! Those who think the 11 is a netbook are nutso! Just look at the Sony Vaio of comparable specs and size==and that is certainly not a netbook. My sense is the 13 incher people are kinda computer snobs and have to bash those others...just my opinion...:) cant we all get along??!

I'm not fat, im just big boned!

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter whether it's called a netbook or not, the 1.4GHz processor is GIMP. However, the processor is only gimp compared to similarly priced computers, it is very capable nonetheless.

You know what it's called. Overpriced, underpowered, handicapable circa 2008, MacBook Air.

How about comparing it to similarly sized/weighted computers?

"Similarly priced".........really? Can I also compare it to a similarly priced fulltower desktop? a 999$ desktop would totally do circles around the MBA, wow I'm cool, the MBA is underpowered and overpriced.

The 11" MBA is by no means underpowered or overpriced for its form factor, it will disintegrate (especially GPU-wise and SSD-wise) anything else weighting just 1kg/2.2lbs. And how about understanding that SSDs are E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E? When you say it's overpriced, you're comparing it to computers with 5400rpm HDDs....

People always need to come up with the 4.4lbs alienware m11x to beat it. Double the weight.

The MBA is underpowered compared to similarly priced used cars.

Or similarly priced sammichs.

Similarly priced is the new black. Or the new netbook.
