2.no change in the video input process, apple didn't add any kind of video resolution scaler so to input video from a non display-port device requires expensive adapters still.(pandering to MBP users again)

As I think you referenced, to Apple this option is really so the iMac can be used as an external display for other Macs. It would be nice, but HDCP is an issue. I could see it as a pretty good selling point for kids in dorms and bedrooms though. They could hook up their BD/PS3/XB into the iMac instead of a TV.

One thing I wish the iMac added was eSATA. Well, and a user upgradable SSD.

Lack of USB3/FW3200 was disappointing. It would be better if Apple offered some sort of ExpressCard slot for expansion. The optical out is sufficient for most surround issues. The CPUs are a huge disappoint to me: decidedly low-end. The graphics cards are what I expected.

I'm just curious, what don't you like about the CPU's? I know you say they are low end, but I was really pleased when I saw the update.

The CPUs aren't going to massively improve until low-power quad cores get released by Intel early next year, which is probably going to be the time USB3 gets introduced into the iMac line. Not sure whether they'll even bother with FW3200 though and ExpressCard is also very unlikely IMO.

Well thats Apple for you :p, Apple has always been behind with hardware.. I think updates should be done every 8 months at least, and Apple should adopt the standards, its annoying that they don't, I mean right now HDMI is used on everything from : Monitors, TV's, Cable Box, Consoles, Cameras, Camcorders..

I think Apple doesn't really want people using displays other then Apple's.. at least on the iMac line.. which sucks... Then again you can get a mini-display port to hdmi, but then you have pay extra..

the forums would say other wise

Since when has forums been 100% of the users?

the imac wouldnt be my main audio source,i have a mancasa music server for that, but when i do use my imac to watch videos it would be nice if i could get a little bit better audio from it.

I don't get you here. The audio is just fine for me. I'm a music nut as well.

I have audio output through my iMac at home going into my surround system in my room. It sounds beautiful.

DP is a direct link to HDMI. Having to spring for a $10 adapter doesn't seem much justification to complain, IMO.

im not saying the sound is horrible and unacceptable,im just saying for a 2000 dollar comptuer i expected just a tiny bit more

That's not 'very high end' if you're using a PC for a music server, or am I missing something?

There's any number of cheap USB audio interfaces from Edirol, M-Audio, Mackie, MOTU, Apogee etc. that would blow away PC or Mac motherboard based audio from $100 up.

I think the iMac has built in optical digital audio out too - so if you use a fibre to connect it to a receiver (for instance) then you get really pristine sound with no extra cost.

you guys are missing the point!,ik i can make it work with adapters and the sound will be okay but that isnt the point, the point is i expected better from apple for the price i pay.i would just like to plug in the preexisting cables i already have that cost me 100 dollars and that are already routed around my office.

Actually firestarter, you are right, even an older iMac here in the office has optical digital audio out, so the OP is really just trolling now.

i dont want optical out,i want super audio out you know the kind that are gold tipped and cost more than you can afford.

There is a real issue with including HDMI input; HDCP. In order for an iMac to accept full 1080p HDMI input, it would need to be a HDCP compliant device. This requires a lot of software changes that Apple does not want to make. the media studios do not want a full fledged computer being able to read their precious 1080p data and be able to record it to disk.

EXACTLY. We would all love a nice easy HDMI port to plug stuff into. BUT, find me one full fledged hard drive based computer with an HDMI "IN" port...it doesn't exist...for a reason!

how many desktop computer have any kind of input though? unless its a all in one

Er... you know that's just marketing, right?

The iMac audio output is absolutely fine. If you were really serious about audio you wouldn't even be thinking of onboard DACs.

Do you seriously think a generic $100 PC motherboard has better audio?

Next you'll be telling me that you use Monster gold plated directional cables too!

Heh, you're funny. Please don't bring up, "How much I can afford". I can afford more than you can imagine. I've got many people on here who would agree with me. Plus from your complaints and grammar usage, you don't seem like one who can actually hold a job.

Now if you're bringing up the gold tipped, "Super audio" I don't even want to bother here anymore. Not worth my time.

Here's the thing though. You are one peson. I'm another and I don't need an HDMI adapter, I want HDMI. This is Apple's way of making sure everyone can connect what they want. If they optimized for everyone you would have VGA, HDMI, DVI, and however many other video interfaces. You would need a headphone jack. People would want stereo inputs as well as optical. USB 3.0 ports. SD, Micro SD, Firewire, line input. I'd also like a couple of XLR and 1/4" inputs.

You see what I'm getting at? The iMac is something that practically anything can be plugged in to- sure it doesn't look the prettiest sometimes, and yes, you are right that the slogan "it just works...." doesn't mean what you thought it meant. But

i understand completely and i agree as well, all those inputs would nearly impossible to fit and thus impossible to cater to everyones needs.that i can agree with.since this is true why not just have a very discrete expansion port so people can add a port or two to their choosing?ik obviosuly that wouldnt work for alot of the ports you listed but it would for some
