i reverted to an earlier backup, then once it was fully restored it still didnt work. half half an hour on the phone to apple, while being told what they though, my messages started coming in.

Okay, so restoring and setting up as a new phone works. I'm an AT&T customer by the way. I never received any texts that people tried to send me during the hours and hours my phone was out of commission, but I can send and receive now. I know it is a pain, but if you have all your contacts saved on your computer, you might as well give it a try.

Earlier backup

I guess losing a little is better than losing everything lol. I'm up and running just fine now. Unbelievably annoying though.

Ok, then theoretically the 4S should work tomorrow too. I freaking hope so cause this sucks.

What's most annoying is that there hasn't been any coverage (that I've seen) of it yet. Need to keep pressure on them to make this a priority against the other issues they are having.

I wasn't getting any SMS from AT&T yesterday BEFORE I upgraded my 3gs to IOS 5.

Today text messages are working again.

Same problem

I also have this problem. Living in Norway.

Here's what i tried, based on tips and info on various message boards:
- Reset all settings. This was a horrible idea, seems like a bug in ios 5. When i selected to reset the phone turned itself off and started up blank and i had to set it up all over again.

- Restore from backup. Tried this not only one time, but two times. Both times it turned up saying that my inbox was full.

I have tried deleting a bunch of messages, but no luck. The only way to send and receive texts was to set the phone up as new, but now none of my app settings and history is on the phone anymore. Highscores, progress, saved data, runs, etc.

I'm just hoping for a fix so that i can restore from backup as soon as they fix it. I want my phone to work like it did yesterday.

I have tried restoring from an old backup as some have found it to work. It allowed maybe 5-10 texts in when I restarted it, but then it immediately went back to inbox full.

how can an inbox be full? i've sent and received tens of thousands of texts over the years and never deleted any.

for what it's worth, i'm using at&t, iphone 4 with iOS 5 and am not having a problem as of now.

It's not. People are still having the issue even after deleting all of them. No idea why it's saying that.

i posted a new thread about this as im having the same exact issues. its just frustrating. i bought this program for 15 bucks the other day because its hte only program or app i have seen that can save text messages. and i have sentimental stuff on my phone lke texts photos etc with some1 who was very close to me and i never ever wanna lose that. i wanna be able to read my messages for good memories. anyway the program is called phoneview. so im gonna do what people have said and just back up everything to phoneview since it saves all the texts and restore my phone. the program is great if anybody has important text messages this is exactly what you need. here is the website if any1 is intrested ecamm.com

SMS inbox full on 1 iPhone4 but not 2nd one

I'm having this problem too on my daughter's iPhone4 after upgrading to iOS5. My iPhone4 doesn't have the issue. I'm waiting to hear about an official fix as various posts here indicate conflicting results. I'm on AT&T.

I upgraded her phone before upgrading to OSX 10.7.2 on her Mac. I upgraded mine after upgrading my Mac to 10.7.2 FWIW.

Idk what exactly I did but I had this same exact problem yesterday and after doing some things to my phone last night it was magically fixed today.. So I guess I'll just review everything I did an hopefully this will help out anyone else having this problem... The first thing I did was send a text message to my self.. U dont get the text u have to restart ur phone like all other txts(some other forum said it might clear out any txting bugs). I also synced my iPhone again.. There wasn't any new software but I honestly don't kno exactly what started making my phone work right so I'm just gonna let everyone kno each step.. Before I synced my phone though I turned off my Imessaging feature under messaging under setting then turned it back on to "reset it".. Also under the same settings make sure you have your iPhone number and email under "receive at".. Idk if it's supposed to but my immessaging goes through my email not phone number.. Yesterday was able to txt other ios5 users but today it went through my email which I believe is how it's supposed to work because for everyone else I txt its my number not email.. As long as you have the persons email under contact info it'll say their name instead just the email btw .. Also another quick thing.. When I synced my phone after all this it added my computer as a contact onto my phone?.. Idk which step exactly fixed it but i Hope this helps and let me kno if anyone has any questions about what I did

Thanks for the update Rocky, shows there is hope. Unfortunately because of the iphone4S (I think) when I turned off/on imessages it has been "wating for activation" for about an hour now. But after I synced and restarted it let about 10 texts through again...but still gave me the inbox full.

same thing

I have At&t and my texts also will not come through. They seem to work on a temporary basis when i hard reboot the phone, but definitely aren't coming through otherwise and i'm extremely frustrated. I did attempt to download ios5 a few times because i was on a bad connection the first time and it kept giving me an internal error. wonder if it has something to do with it? anyone find anything besides restoring the phone as new?
