Woo! Can't wait. Going from white Note 3 to black Note 4.
ATT also gave me a 10/14 date. Should be on my front step that morning via UPS. Though I will see if they'll match the Amazon price.

Got it on 2 year contract so I didn't she'll out full price. Oh and I came from an iPhone 4! Thanks for playing but try again.

Those contract-based carriers must love people like you.

Which carrier are you on? With ATT I get a $25 lower bill per month buying it straight out, which works out to be the same as I got it under contract, maybe less because a contract phone pays the $40 activation fee. Heck I can even do interest free financing, get the $25/month credit and avoid the $40 activation fee AND not be stuck in a contract. Seems very far from a fail.

I'm on the single line plan with Verizon that is $60/month.

Things might be different in the us but there's no such thing as a 'subsidised' phone in the UK on contract. In fact it almost always works out cheaper to buy outright as opposed to shelling out £** per month for 24 months.

Yeah, they must make a killing off of my $60/mo plan

US carriers are definitely trending towards ending phone subsidies. AT&T & Verizon are the largest and while they offer subsidies on 2 year contracts they are pushing customers towards their programs that make customers pay in full for their devices but allows them to upgrade sooner if they would like to trade in their device. I'm content hanging onto my phone for 2 years in exchange for a lower price for 2 years up front.

Yesterday, Verizon gave me $200 towards the 64GB iPhone 6. Would have been $299 on contract but ended up only costing me $100! Out of contract its $749 - actually $800 after tax! I think I made out like a bandit!

Yeah I don't know much about Verizon and if they give customers an incentive to not subsidize their phone. I just know your statement was false when it came to AT&T, they have no phone subsidies anymore so it is NO advantage to sign a contract for a subsidized phone. IMO the opposite is true, it would be a fail on the consumers part to sign a contract and end up paying MORE for the phone.

Plus Samsung has a $200 rebate on the Note 4, so the full price one I'm buying off Tmobile will be $549. If you bought one of Verizon it would be $499 full price.

Why are you justifying your purchases?

If you can afford buying a smartphone every year, why not?
If he can't, he has probably the wrong job and/or education...

I don't know where you get your information from but it's not correct! You can still get the subsidy at AT&T.

You do know that you pay EXTRA every month on a subsidy plan, correct? I mean a man of your intelligence and financial savvy surely should know this. You pay an EXTRA $15-25 per month. On 10gb mobile shared plans and up you pay $25, so $25 x 24 months = $600. Now add $600 to the subsidy price, don't forget to add the $40 activation fee and tell me how that compares to just buying the phone outright.

Edit: Well I thought about it and as I'm sure you would be busy preparing a financial investment package for a multi billion dollar client figured I would just do the math for us. Oh and that monthly credit is funny enough in that same picture you posted.

16gb iPhone 6 in your picture
AT&T subsidy: 199 subsidy price + 25x24 months = 600 + 40 activation fee = $839
Full price = $649

My point was not weather it was cheaper or not. It was simply that a "subsidy" weather good or bad was available. You said it wasn't. The financial piece of it is a different story. No need to take the low road and take personal cheap shots.

No, your point was pretty much that those of us buying it unsubsidized were stupid, presumably because you saved money getting it subsidized.

AT&T doesn't have subsidies anymore, that's figurative because when you add up the numbers they really don't, although they do have something called "subsidized" it's just a great big fat sham.

My apologies for being dickish, I just didn't like your original tone but I think we are both right. It's cheaper for you on Verizon I presume, since I don't know much about their plans and subsidy costs. But it's actually cheaper for me to buy the phone outright on AT&T.

I bought it subsidized as well on att but I don't understand how it's cheaper buying it on Verizon for an unlocked model. Our family plan has 4 lines and we all have unlimited data, buying it unlocked doesn't give you a discount on your plan because att still charged you the same monthly premium. So how would I be able to save money in this case?

If you have an old AT&T grandfathered plan then it wouldn't save you money buying the phone at full price. But then again you pay more for less minutes to talk and have "unlimited" data which is really 5gb before it gets throttled. I also considered keeping an old plan, but the new mobile share plans are quite generous, approaching pre-paid prices and much cheaper than anything they've ever offered before. If you have one of the newer mobile share plans then you DO get a $15-25 discount per month if you buy a full price phone.

Best buy has a $200 gift card with trade in of any phone when buying the Note 4. I wonder if you could also stack the Samsung $200 rebate on top of this?

----------

Wow Amazon will give me $87 for my iPhone 4/16gb, that's more than fair for something I have lying around as an emergency phone. Very tempting.

Someone else said something about Amazon and no tax, but they definitely charge tax, I'm pretty sure they charge tax in all states now.

I wish we had a definitive answer if getting this from amazon would allow us to use the Samsung rebate.

Hmm, WTF. Tmobile yesterday offered me like $60 for my iPhone 4 16gb, but today they are offering me $201 !! Kind of worthless though as it's only a bill credit in 3 billing cycles, oh well.

Best option so far is looking like Best Buy if they sell the Tmobile version and get their $200 gift card. Or possibly Amazon if the Samsung rebate works with them. Guess will have to wait until the 24th to see who carries the Tmobile one.

Pre ordered mine tonight (white). Took advantage of the AT&T 'trade in your iPhone for $200 credit' promotion instead of the Samsung promotion. Good deal since the 32GB iPhone 4 was only worth $50 according to AT&T.
