Can’t decide between the two.

I love the smart HDR and selfie camera and a few other things about the iPhone but also like some of the features of the Note.

Just been offered a Note 9 in very good condition for £420 which is a very good price.

What do you think? As the iPhone is going to cost me around £300 more.

£300 more? Seems like a no brainer to me. £420 for what was arguably the best phone last year? Would take that personally

Yeah the Xs Max is around £750 to buy secondhand so it’s going to be £330 more to grab that.

I would go for the Note 9. It does more and will also provide you so much more customization than an iPhone. I am having iOS fatigue myself and highly recommend for people to pull away from Apple's closed ecosystem because you pay more and it does less.

If you’re not fussed with the software, then go for the better value for money for you.

People may want it to do less. Could be related to why people go for a cat over a dog. :D

Note 9 - best in class and is still current generation until the Note 10. You'll still get back what you paid for it in a year's time.

Massive iPhone fan here over the years but the S10 Plus has stolen my attention. Does more, looks nicer and has better hardware. iMessage can be overcome.

That part seems unlikely tbh. The Note 8 sells for £300 right now.

At that sort of price variation, I'd say go for the Note9, DEFINITELY.

To be fair, Samsung is getting more aggressive with trade ins. The Note 8 is worth $550 via trade in, which is a helluva a good deal. If you got the S10e, you're paying $200 out of pocket just as an idea. Imagine getting $550 off the S11?

iOS is really just losing its luster day by day.

Lack of timely software updates. It’s a huge problem on Samsung devices and the delays get worse and worse each year if you keep the same device

I am not going to shill for Samsung, but Google seems to be cherry picking a lot of software features Samsung devices have. As long as you get patches, that's all that really matters on the software side because you're in for two major OS updates, even though it won't be as timely.

2 years of support plus monthly security patches. Your argument is flawed.

iPhone 5s is going out of support this year... 6 years after its release. 6 years.

By the way, two Android version upgrades are nice, but you have no idea when you will get them. iPhone 6 will get the iOS 13 update on the same day as everyone else (the Wednesday after the iPhone launch)

iPhone is better for longevity, period.

I wouldn't even worry about having a phone for 6 years because hardware typically wears out much earlier than that and the device will feel slightly antiquated once the 2020 iPhone redesign comes out with 5g support.

Chances are most folks won't hold onto their devices for 6 years anyways. Plus, what good was the extra software support when Apple throttled their devices? It took someone to unearth support for them to change it around.

Regardless, for longevity iPhone gives you the best return on investment. If op plans to replace it in a couple of years, the difference is probably immaterial, but if it gets to 3-4 years, which is becoming the more normal cycle, iPhone is a better bet.

Agreed. Sad that Android doesn't have that much long support.

I just told you, you get patches every month. The Android releases at launch of a new product.

Android is terrible at updates - it's hit or miss whether you'll ever see one except on their top tier phones.

If you're technically minded you can get a newer version of android on your phone even if it's not supported. Core apps are updated via the play store as well as google play services and there are security updates for 3 years. In addition to this it seems as though google are going to give the original pixel android Q. There's nothing stopping Samsung following suit. They are good at responding to customer complaints.

Right, but with iPhone you don't have to do that AND the version you're going to is tested. If you have a problem on the newer Android on unsupported hardware, you're SOL.

Of course they are, which is good, but again, if that support is for three years, that's still well short of what Apple is doing with its iPhones.

This is just speculation. There isn't any evidence to suggest Samsung is going to respond to Google at all. The XS Max will be supported for years. We don't know if Samsung will be supporting the S10 that long.
