So answer this or just concede the argument. The iPhone 5s came out in 2013. So did the Galaxy S4.

When is the Galaxy S4 getting Android Oreo?
What's the point of getting updates that slow your phone and eat it's battery life to basically an unusable state? Aka iPhone 5s,6,6s,7...
Where are most S4 users? They upgraded to a newer phone years ago, the S5 is still receiving updates. Almost nobody keeps their phone for too long and the ones that do don't give a Damm about updates. Those users usually dismiss the update pop up. That poor argument of iPhones cycle updates is an old vested flawed argument, what's the point of getting a new iOS update in which you have to wait almost until the end of it's cycle for Apple to fix most bugs? My iPhone X battery life went to the trash with the latest update. My iPhone 6 is completely unusable with random crashes and slowdowns. The forums gets spammed every update because of software instability. Thats not called updates, that's called beta testing.

Also the fact that the users who pride themselves of "Apple's 5 year update cycle" are the ones who switch to the newer iPhone every year a newer generation comes out. Why use the updates argument when it's not even going to effect you at all.

For a variety of reasons:
Those who like to sell on old devices, it hurts the resale value
Those who like to pass down old devices to family members, having them abandoned by Android OEMs within two years hurts their usefulness/makes them a security risk

Many of these Android OEMs are also starting to make it difficult/impossible to get replacement batteries which will have degraded horribly after two years too. At least Apple offers a battery replacement service for older iPhones.

Security updates matter more than regular android os updates as the features on android are already there that isn't on apple devices so what's added on android os updates is hardly a must have

That said yes updates aren't as regular as the iPhone but that's the only negative for me in comparison to the iPhone

OP, get the Max, GMA just illustrated my point. S4 owners can't keep their phones long enough due to poor support from Samsung. There are plenty of 5S owners still out there or on the cusp of upgrading while the S4 is long dead.

iPhone is significantly better from a longevity standpoint. Period.

Depends what he wants. If updates are all that matters sure but people shouldn't buy phones based on updates. You buy based on what the phone can do.

Go out and use a 5s with the newest version of ios. It doesn't run well at all.

Another thing to mention would be the cost difference. You can get a Note 9 for probably $300 cheaper than a like quality XS Max.

I would jump on the Note 9, and use an Ipad to enjoy everything IOS. To me, smartphones are tools, and the note 9 works better then the iPhone in that regard. The Iphone is like a depository of apps with a phone app. Works very well as a pad but not so much a phone, compared to the Note.

The iPhone works as a "phone," but fails to be a top-of-the-line smartphone. At least the Note 9 can compete amongst the best because of its versatility. The iPhone wouldn't crack my top 3 because its missing multitasking and other features to maximize its hardware. It's a software problem.

Note 9 and use an iPad for movies and such. What I currently do. The 9 is a fantastic device, very powerful, and excellent battery life.
